What is RTP?

RTP is the “return to player” from a slot or game. It is, effectively, the inverse of the concept of “house edge.” take, for example, starburst which has an RTP of 96.1%. Therefore, the house edge is 3.9%. This means that you are “projected” to get back 96.1% of what you bet.

So for every £10 you stake, you will win back £9.61?

That is not the case. If it were, why would you bother gambling at all? In practice, of course, you could stake £10, and walk away with £80. Or you could even lose it all. So how does it work?

Theoretical RTP: an explanation

The RTP that a video slot quotes is something that is known as the theoretical RTP. When a slot is developed, the creators programme the RTP into the game’s DNA. Every slot spin is determined by a random number generator (or more accurately, a pseudo random number generator). The spins are random and cannot be rigged. (for more information, see this article called “are online casinos fixed?”).

However, if it were truly random, then there would be no guarantee that a casino or bingo site would make money. The gambling industry wouldn’t exist as it does today.

So, built into this pseudo randomness is a code that ensures a house edge over an infinite number of spins. If we go back to our original example of starburst, we know there’s variance every time we spin. We may win (sometimes big) or we may lose it all. However, if we keep spinning on and on into infinity, the average RTP will constantly get closer to that 96.1% figure.

How can we prove the RTP is correct, then?

In the past, regulators only demanded that a video slot get its RTP tested before its release. But in september 2016, the UK gambling commission announced that it would require operators to monitor the performance of their slots. The GC deemed it possible that developers could have created games with a deteriorating RTP over time. This could be achieved by hidden code or some other technique or mistake in the implementation or operation of the slot.

This is where the concept of the actual RTP comes in, and how we can marry the two together.

Actual RTP: example study

Let’s say a casino is monitoring starburst’s RTP. We know that the theoretical RTP is 96.1%, and the site is testing this against the month that just finished.

During this month, the casino accrued £200,000 in starburst turnover from player bets. In kind, players won a total of £189,000. Therefore, the slot site made a cheeky £11,000 in profit from starburst. In order to work out the actual RTP of starburst in the last month, you just perform this simple equation:

Good for the casino, that’s over 1.5% more profit. Bad for the players, who are not getting the bang for their buck that the theoretical RTP declared.

As we mentioned, this is a pretty standard variation. In theory, the more months that pass, the closer to the theoretical RTP we get.

Slot volatility & RTP: what’s the connection?

As we know, another factor in the player’s slot experience is the volatility (or variance). Two slots may have the same RTP at 96.1%, but one may be high variance and other low. So what does that mean?

High volatility slot: this means the slot will not pay out that frequently. But when it does, the wins will be much bigger. In essence, a high variance slot is “all or nothing.”

Low volatility slot: this slot will give wins much more frequently. However, they tend not to be as large. Starburst is a good example of a low variance slot. This is part of the reason why it is so popular.

Medium volatility slot: somewhere in the middle.

Therefore, when a casino is monitoring the performance of a video slot, they take volatility into consideration. The frequency and size of payouts will go help to explain a slots overall RTP performance. You would expect a low variance slot to stay closer to its theoretical RTP. A high volatility slot you expect to be more… volatile.

Thus, an operator can create expected parameters to factor this in. Provided the actual RTP falls often enough within a high threshold and a low threshold of the slot’s theoretical RTP, then it can be deemed kosher. For a high variance slot, the lower and higher threshold will be looser. For a low variance slot, they will be tighter. But the longer the monitor period, the more these parameters should shrink closer and closer to the theoretical RTP.

Why do progressive slots have lower rtps?

Often you’ll see that progressive slots that offer large jackpots will have much lower rtps. Either, they’ll be in low 90s or even the high 80s. The logic behind this is quite simple. When a player triggers the jackpot, a rare occurrence, it means the slot will have to pay out an abnormally large sum of money. Therefore, they have to put money aside in order to pay for somebody’s windfall. The slot developer will do this by lowering the RTP by a couple of percent and stashing this money. This way, when a player wins thousands, or sometimes millions of pounds, the developer can draw from this cash pile.

Thus, we believe you should think of progressive slots like playing the lottery. If you want to enjoy the act of spinning, then looks for a non-progressive slot that has a higher RTP. However, if you want to give yourself the chance of winning a life-changing amount of money, and you’re not so bothered about sustainability, then give a jackpot slot a spin.

How to choose a new slot

This is all to say that choosing a slot with a higher RTP will not guarantee you bigger wins. If you stake £100 on starburst, you could easily win more in a day than on blood suckers. However, playing blood suckers, with its 98% RTP, gives you a better chance of recouping your money. Therefore, in terms of long term gambling strategies, choosing slots with the highest rtps is a must.

You can, of course, choose the video slot you want. Maybe you like the look of it, or it’s a branded slot of a movie that you love. That’s absolutely fine; playing slots should be all about having a good time. Just remember, choosing a slot with 80% RTP just doesn’t make savvy business sense!

What is RTP on slot machines?

The RTP, an acronym short for return to player, is a figure in percent that informs you about the odds of winning while you’re playing an online slot. RTP rate is the percentage of total wins, over the total stakes played.

You may already have seen this popular example that is used to illustrate how the RTP works:

A slot you are playing at has an RTP of 95%. If you play 100 rounds at £1, you can expect to win £95 back. This way, you win back most of what you wager. The remaining 5% of your wager in this example are the house edge – the money the casino earns off of each wager.

It’s not quite as easy as this, as the RTP is calculated over millions of spins. These spins include your own as well as the spins by other players at online casinos all over the world. Simply said, it means you won’t win back £95 each time you spin the reels a hundred times. You will win back your money, eventually, but the RTP makes no claim as to when exactly your winning spins will take place.

You will win your money back – in theory. That’s why the RTP is often referred to as “theoretical”, simply for the sake of honesty. Every player’s wagers contribute to the theoretical RTP. Your £95 could be going to someone else’s win one moment, your own jackpot the next. The RTP is a figure that is calculated from the pool of wagers every player contributes to.

Since it is a statistical average, it means that while one player hits it big, another may win a small amount or not at all. The outcome is completely random by design. That randomness is the beauty of gambling, after all it wouldn’t be the same to simply methodically win your money back. This way you can expect great wins even with small wagers. Luck is essential to gambling, the RTP doesn’t change that.

To actually figure out when you will win, you need several other variables, such as the hit frequency and a slot’s volatility. This is where it gets overly complicated, and so most gamblers go by a simple rule of thumb – the higher the volatility, the better the deal.

Slot game developers are required to let players know what the odds of a win are. Thus you will always be able to find out the RTP of the slots you like to play. You can find often find the RTP in a slot’s info section or paytable. This is the case for all netent slots, for example. Some casinos have categories for the highest RTP slots to make them easier to find.

Why does the RTP matter?

If the RTP doesn’t actually do a good job at telling you what you can expect to win back, then what is it good for?

First of all, while the wish to hit it big is no doubt a motivation to play online slots, it’s by far not the only one. To have a healthy and responsible relationship with online gambling, you should play for fun, and in a slightly roundabout way, the RTP makes an argument for the quality of a slot. After all, slot game providers have developed fun bonus games and symbols that not only often mean a win, but also make each win a spectacular affair.

This means that in a slot with a high RTP, you can expect bonus features like wilds, multipliers or the ever-popular free spins round. In the busy online casino industry, slots with great RTP rates force the competition to come up with their own slots that gamblers will like. This keeps the industry lively and the RTP high overall – you can only win in this case, both in terms of money and enjoyment.

What else influences the RTP?

So far, so simple. However, we have already mentioned several other terms that are related to the return to player and just as important. These are:

The hit frequency is a figure just as nebulous as the RTP. This percentage denotes how often a slot will award a win. However, this is once again an average calculated over a very high number of spins. Additionally, game makers are not required to disclose their slot’s hit frequency. If you can find out the hit frequency in addition to the RTP, however, it can provide additional help in estimating how good a deal a slot really is.

The house edge is always an important figure, whether you’re playing slot games or table games. The house edge tells you how much of your wager automatically goes to the casino. Even the highest RTP slots will leave one or two percent of your wager to the casino, after all a casino has to earn something, too. Thus, even if you can’t tell exactly how much you will win, the RTP at least tells you how much a casino stands to gain from you playing a particular slot.

Finally, the volatility, also known as variance, is perhaps the most important figure to keep in mind when thinking about the RTP.
The volatility is either expressed as a number between 1 and 10, or simply by the words low, medium and high. This figure tells you something about both the frequency wins you can expect and how high these wins can be.

Nowadays the randomness of mechanically stopped reels has been replaced by random numbers generated by a computer, but the principles remain same. These principles of randomness are honoured by every licensed game provider. How slots work

The majority of online slots still use reels to represent the result of each spin. Despite the fact that the reels are rendered by a computer, the game math under the hood still has 3 to 5 sets of symbols (virtual reels) that stop at random positions. Why change something that has worked fine for years, right?

Random number generator (RNG)

There is one thing all fair slot games have in common: the outcome of each round is based exclusively on a random number provided by a random number generator (RNG). The higher the size of your bets, the higher (usually) the RTP of your betting system. We assume that all the other rules of the betting system remain the same.

This reminds me that I should explain how rngs work. Modern rngs used in online casinos are dedicated hardware devices that generate random numbers out of electromagnetic noise. It’s like an old television without signal – a lot of black and white dots. Black pixel is 0, white pixel is 1. Take a photo of a small part of a TV screen, convert the pixels into 1s and 0s, write them into a text file and you have a random number.

RNG hardware generates thousands of random numbers every second. So on one hand, you will change the outcome of the next round if you press the start button one second later. However, on the other hand, you have no chance to predict whether the outcome will be better for you or not. So the fair randomness remains.

Now that I have explained how fair slots really work, it is time to bust several popular myths about slots.

Myth 1: "slots have cycles of winning combinations. You can win by observing these cycles and by jumping in during a winning part of the cycle."

This is a myth, as slots really work based on fair random numbers. The advantage of the casino is hidden in the game math, and there is absolutely no need to complicate the entire system with any type of cycle.

In reality you may observe hot streaks and cold streaks. But that’s just a result of natural randomness and these streaks are absolutely not predictable.

Myth 2: "slots are programmed not to pay after a big win and to pay more when they’re full of money."

This is a myth which probably comes from the days of standalone slots which paid out to the winning player directly. But it was as much of a myth then as it is now. If you won more money than the slot machine could pay out, you got the remainder from casino staff.

RTP (return to player, also payout ratio or payout percentage) is the long-term statistical rate of the total money won divided by the total money staked. The phrase "long-term statistical rate" may sound complicated, so here is the more human-friendly explanation:

If a game RTP is 96%, it means that if you start with $1,000,000,000 and then play 1,000,000,000 rounds at $1 each, then you should end up with approximately $960,000,000 dollars.

If you play just a few hundreds rounds, your current return may vary from 30% up to 1000%. But the more rounds you play, the more likely you’ll be closer to the statistical RTP of the slot game. That’s why I used such big numbers in the example above.

RTP is a very popular characteristic in online slots because it can be expressed as a single number. It is easy to compare, and the most of the popular game providers declare the RTP of each slot game. Then it’s easy to write articles like "top 10 best paying slots".

RTP can be used for various simplified calculations, like how much you can expect to lose from a bonus while rolling it over.

Volatility

These simplified calculations are good to impress your friends while drinking beer. But for more serious calculations (like those which we did in our bonus hunting article), you’ll need to count volatility as well.

Volatility of slots is quite a complicated concept so I’ll start with an explanation of volatility in roulette:

When betting on color you can win 2 times your bet and you win quite often (18 of 37 rounds).

When betting on number you can win 36 times your bet but you win only in 1 in 37 rounds.

The volatility of roulette can be easily expressed in numbers from 2 to 36, depending on what type of stake you take. Higher volatility means that your individual wins will be higher. However, you will win less often and you are more likely to lose your entire budget faster.

Volatility of slots

Volatility of a slot game can’t be expressed as a single number, as you can win thousands of different win amounts as a result of the many different winning combinations. I have found out that the most accurate way to present slot volatility is a chart like this:

This chart shows the share of total wins paid out as various multiples of the bet. For example, the chart above displays that 15% of total wins are paid out as individual wins with sizes ranging from 2x to 5x the bet, and 10% of total wins are paid out in higher individual wins from 200x to 500x the bet.

How to calculate volatility

As volatility can’t be expressed as a single number, game providers usually only classify slot into either "low", "medium", or "high" volatility categories. These categories can’t be effectively compared, nor used in any calculations, but they can give you at least a basic idea about the volatility of the game you are about to play.

Finding the real slot volatility (in the form of the chart presented above) is a very difficult task. Basically, you have to reverse-engineer the reel set of a game and properly estimate probabilities of other special game features. Even for me, this is a task that would take a day or more (depending on the slot’s complexity).

Slot volatility can be roughly estimated from the paytable and the reel set. Look for the highest winning combination. What is the chance of hitting it? How much will you win?

I personally like high volatility games as you can win higher amounts, so you can have the same thrill with lower stakes. And lower stakes mean that you’ll statistically lose less. This effect can easily compensate for a slightly lower RTP.

For example, lotteries often have an RTP of 50%, but the chances of winning the jackpot and becoming a multimillionaire keeps the masses playing it. Even my mom sometimes buys a lottery ticket and imagines what she would do if she won. And she would never, ever throw a single cent into a slot machine.
