There are two different shops per faction. The base shop and the secret shop. In the shop areas, items can be swapped from the backpack without time penalty. The base shops are located within the fountain are behind the ancients. All basic items except the secret ones can be bought there. Additionally a majority of the upgrades can be completed there.
Items
Items are in-game equipment that provide heroes with bonus attributes and special abilities. They can be purchased from several shops on the game map. Lower tier items are combined into higher tier items, usually with the help of a recipe. Heroes have six item slots in their inventory, four in their backpack, and six more in their stash. Items can be picked up and delivered to their owner with a courier.

- Multiple instances of the same aura or debuff will not stack, even if the two copies of the item providing it are owned by separate heroes.
- Some items do not provide their effect to heroes with passive abilities providing the same or similar effect. For example, most heroes with a bash ability cannot use the passive ability from skull basher .
- Some items have effects that only apply to heroes that are ranged or melee.
- The shop at the enemy fountain can also be used to buy items, sell items, and access the stash.
- The secret shops have a restricted inventory, and cannot be used to access the hero's stash.

Ranked roles update
Today’s update features a change to the rank system that replaces the core/support separation with a single rank that uses handicaps for each of the five ranked roles, representing your relative strength playing each position. This change will help the matchmaker better account for a player’s different performance levels between various roles. Winning or losing games will modify your single rank.
When queuing for your best role(s), the matchmaker will consider your full MMR. Queuing for your weaker role(s), however, will result in the matchmaker placing you into a match at a lower MMR.
When you match into a game, it will display the adjusted badge levels that were used to match each player. Regardless of which role you queue for and play, the results of the match will affect your actual MMR value.
Your initial levels for each role are calculated based on your previous core/support MMR values and analysis of your past 100 games. You can track your current role adjustments in the role queue menu.
Introducing regional leagues
Starting after TI10, the dota pro circuit will introduce a new system that presents competitive dota in a more scheduled and consistent way during the year and features a better structure for the development of tier 2 and tier 3 teams.
The year will be divided in 3 seasons. Each season will be composed of 6 regional leagues, leading into a major with the best teams in the world. The dota year will conclude, as usual, with the international.
Regional leagues:
Each of the six leagues will feature a prize pool of USD 280,000 per season. Leagues will feature two divisions with 8 teams in the upper division and 8 in the lower division, for a total of 96 teams participating across the world. After each season, the 2 bottom teams of the upper division will swap places with the top 2 of the lower division. The bottom 2 teams of the lower division will be eliminated from the league and replaced with 2 new teams coming from open qualifiers to allow for new teams and talent to be introduced into the scene over time.
We believe the consistency and regularity of the league throughout the year, paired with a flat and deep prize pool distribution will, over time, nurture healthy and strong tier 2/3 competition.
The leagues will have a duration of six weeks, and each region will consist of a full bo3 round robin among all teams. In order to make it easier to follow your favorite region and teams, all matches will be in consistent date and time slots throughout the year for each region.
All upper division matches will be presented from studio broadcasts. All lower division matches will be featured on dotatv.
Each region will have 3 competition days a week, schedule will be as follows, all times in PST. Each slot represents a best of 3 series:

Additionally, teams will be able to use a stand-in for up to 4 of their matches as long as that stand-in is either competing in a lower division or not competing in a league at all.
If a team decides to change regions, they will have to enter the region through open qualifiers and climb through that region’s lower division.
For the duration of each season, from the beginning of the league until the end of the major, all rosters will be locked. After the major concludes and until the beginning of the next season, roster changes will be possible. Each player change will incur a 15% penalty on current points for that team.

The outlanders update
Today’s update unleashes two new heroes — snapfire and void spirit — and unveils the 7.23 gameplay update, featuring a host of changes, all-new features, and multiple reworked items and abilities.
Head over to the outlanders update page for a full list of all the changes now available.
7.24 game play change analysis
Another patch, another new game to learn. In the 7.23 patch, radical changes were introduced by valve who is no stranger to radical shifts in the game. After several small patches to fix some issues, the 7.24 patch arrived and it brought more changes to deal with.
This patch seems like further iteration and refinement on the changes in the 7.23 patch. In this article we’ll be looking at some of the more interesting changes that effect gameplay.
Some perspective
When the 7.23 patch came out, many people were focused on the neutral item changes thinking that they would totally shift the balance of the game. Turns out the neutral items weren’t nearly as influential as everyone thought.
What did go under the radar though were the outposts. As people played more and more games it became apparent that the major change of the patch were the outposts. It forced coordinated movements across the map to capture new objectives that influenced XP gain which influences the power spikes of heroes.
So, with new changes in the 7.24 patch, only time will tell which changes are hugely influential and which are forgettable.
GPM talents
All GPM talents were removed. Heroes effected by this change are:
- Ancient apparition - level 10 talent changed from +90 gold/min to +175 chilling touch attack range
- Chen - level 20 talent changed from +180 gold/min to -30s hand of god cooldown
- Crystal maiden - level 15 talent changed from +150 gold/min to -2s crystal nova cooldown
- Dark willow - level 15 talent changed from +120 gold/min to +40 bedlam damage
- Disruptor - level 20 talent changed from +180 gold/min to kinetic field grants true sight
- Earth spirit - level 20 talent changed from +150 gold/min to +3.5s geomagnetic grip silence
- Enigma - level 15 talent changed from +150 gold/min to +40 malefice instance damage
- Grimstroke - level 10 talent changed from +90 gold/min to +100 ink swell max damage
- Io - level 15 talent changed from +120 gold/min to +400 spirits max distance
- Jakiro - level 20 talent changed from +150 gold/min to +400 dual breath range
- Lion - level 15 talent changed from +150 gold/min to +60 mana drain
- Nyx assassin - level 10 talent changed from +90 gold/min to +0.3s impale stun duration
And many more as this list goes on and on. A total of 27 heroes had GPM talents that will be changed to another type of talent.
GPM talents were mostly for support heroes to help them scale into late game as well as improve their quality of life as a support buying wards, smokes, and dusts.
This seemed like an easy solution to the economy problem but as cptn.Canuck mentioned in his article about dota’s economy, the GPM talents were easy answers to the issue of dota’s economic inflation.
With this change, it seems as if valve is recognizing that simply increasing the passive gold of heroes isn’t the right solution to a larger inflation issue. Expect more changes to dota’s economy in the future as icefrog and co. Continue to learn about dota’s economy.
With 27 heroes being affected and new talents being added, this will undoubtedly affect the game in unseen ways. Some talents will emerge as overpowered and some will as underpowered.
Talents I find intriguing are the +60 mana drain from lion at level 15, puck’s huge warning rift aoe silence increase, and earth spirit’s +3.5s geomagnetic grip silence.
Lion could be used in a different way in team fights. Usually you’d want lion to hide in the shadows and disable enemies as they jump but with this huge mana drain increase, lion could be used to disable enemies in other ways. If an invoker jumps in with a combo, lion could drain all his mana quickly which would force invoker to run away or lose all his mana.
Earth spirit’s +3.5s silence increase is huge. That would make it a total of 7s of silence which put simply, is a long time, and it works in an aoe. A 5 man geomagnetic grip at level 20+ is stronger than a global silence.
Map changes
Shrines are removed and the outposts were moved to the primary jungles.
I’m personally a fan of this change because it promotes more aggressive dota play.
When shrines were first introduced, they were in the high ground. This made pushing high ground much more difficult because teams could heal for a large amount of health while the enemy was trying to attack an already disadvantageous position. This led to drawn out games where high ground sieges were very risky which resulted in cheesy strategies like abusing illusion based heroes to attack high ground.
With shrines in the jungle, the same thing applied. Teams were afraid to attack into the enemy jungle because shrines made it harder to win fights there. Teams would simply avoid a part of the map because it wasn’t worth the risk.
Now with shrines removed and the outposts replacing them, this promotes more aggressive plays from both sides. Outposts are hugely influential in the power spikes of heroes and provides free vision.
Instead of avoiding a part of the map because the risk was higher than the reward, the opposite now applies. The reward is higher than the risk because you want as many outposts as you can get, free vision, and owning a part of the enemy jungle.
I like this change because I like pvp dota more than pve dota and this promotes that.
Neutral item and backpack changes
- Heroes now have a dedicated slot for neutral items.
- A max of one neutral item can be equipped.
- A new neutral item stash is in the fountain.
- Backpack slot reduced from 4 to 3.
- Neutral item drop chance increased.
It seems as if valve is pushing the limit of changes and then scaling them back after realizing they went too far.
The 7.23 patch introduced neutral items with no restrictions and increased the backpack size when no one really asked for that. Now they’re scaling back the neutral items and backpack size.
I’m not too sure what to expect with these changes. The backpack increase mostly benefitted late game carry heroes that love having as many items as possible. Naga siren, medusa, spectre, and tinker players probably loved those changes but they were benefited disproportionately.
While supports were content with their GPM talents, carries continued to scale harder and harder.
Neutral items seemingly benefited supports because they got free items and cores would give them items that they didn’t need.
I personally don’t think neutral items were too influential in the game before but now they’re even less influential. Maybe valve decided they wanted it this way.
Final thoughts
I’m personally a fan of the changes in this patch. I didn’t like the direction 7.23 was headed in but 7.24 shifted the direction towards somewhere I’m liking.
Shrines being removed and outposts replacing them promote more fighting and aggressive jungle raiding. GPM talent removal forces supports to be more mindful of their game play. The item slot changes nerfs late game carries slightly. These are all changes I like.
What do you guys think of this change of direction? Is dota heading down a path you like, or did you like where 7.23 was taking the game?
Nigma wins dota 2 bukovel minor 2020 and earns slot for dreamleague season 13
Nigma puts out notice. Nigma
They're at it again. Kuro "kuroky" salehi takhasomi has once again led his dota 2 team through the gauntlet as they grabbed the top spot at the weplay! Bukovel minor 2020. With this win they get a chance to be part of the upcoming dreamleague season 13 leipzig major.
Long time dota 2 fans know that before forming nigma, kuroky was part of team liquid and lifted the aegis during the international 2017. What made that win even more impressive was that liquid dropped to the lower bracket after the opening matches of the playoffs. The team not only worked their way to the grand finals, but swept newbee 3-0 to win the championship.
So how did nigma fare in the bukovel minor? In the opening matches of the group stage, fighting pandas managed to beat nigma 2-1. However, nigma then made short work of FURIA esports in the elimination match. In the decider match, nigma again played against the pandas. Nigma got the upper hand and dropped the pandas from the tournament. You can read more about the group stage here.
In the playoffs, nigma was matched against royal never give up. The match went the distance with RNG getting the win over nigma 2-1. This meant that nigma was now in the lower bracket. The team's first hurdle was against gambit esports. Gambit had been showing excellent performances, but couldn't get past geek fam in the first round of the playoffs. While gambit took the first game, nigma won the next two. Nigma's next match was versus geek fam and despite two long games, nigma managed to grab the win and set off for a rematch against RNG in the grand finals.
Grand finals
In the first game, nigma went with aliwi "w33" omar on huskar. This gave them the advantage early in the game. However, they couldn't find an answer to RNG's du "monet" peng, who was on drow ranger. With gao "setsu" zhenxiong on outworld devourer, RNG was able to get the needed damage output that nigma couldn't handle.
For the second game, nigma again started strong, especially with amer "miracle-" al-barkawi on phantom lancer. However, RNG managed to again gain advantage and control the game. To nigma's credit, they were able to make the most of RNG's mistakes. One of the game's highlights was five tier 5 neutral items getting dropped. One of these was the stygian desolator, which helped nigma as it increased the damage potential of w33, who was on windranger. The game lasted a whopping 80 minutes, eventually going to nigma.
The third game wasn't as intense, as it was all nigma. Despite setsu being on storm spirit, nigma was able to find a way to neutralize him, particularly with miracle- on phantom lancer and w33 on drow ranger.
For the fourth game, nigma made the decision to pick of RNG rather than go for team fights. Nigma's patience finally paid off as just before the 40-minute mark, amer "miracle-" al-barkawi on earthshaker managed to pull of an excellent echo slam, which led to nigma wiping out RNG. Eventually nigma tried for one final and risky push, and this payed off.
In addition to winning the bukovel minor, miracle- was named the core MVP with kuroky awarded the support MVP.

Kardel sharpeye, the sniper, is a ranged agility hero who excels at dealing moderate to heavy damage from an incredible range. With no escape mechanism, poor mobility, and only a modest health pool, sniper is exceptionally frail at all stages of the game and vulnerable to enemies who confront him head-on. However, his abilities provide him both the means to keep his distance and systematically destroy his enemies from afar. Shrapnel is a potent, high-cast range zoning ability that provides vision for sniper while slowing and damaging enemies in its area of effect; with up to 3 charges on the ability, sniper can completely close off any viable routes for his opponents to approach or escape. Headshot supplements sniper's right-click damage and briefly stops enemies when it procs, which can be quite debilitating since it has a high rate of occurring. His third ability, take aim, gives him the largest attack range of any hero in the game, allowing him to deal high DPS from a safe distance while also giving him the ease to switch between targets at a moment's notice. Finally, assassinate is a strong finishing and harassing ability, dealing hefty damage to an enemy from an enormous distance after a brief aiming period. Sniper is heavily item-dependent, relying on means to increase his survivability as well as his damage output as the game progresses. Skilled players will find that positioning is the most important thing to keep in mind when playing both as him or against him.

What are dota 2 custom games?
Besides playing a matchmaking or normal match, dota 2 also allows creating custom game lobbyies, where you can play with bots and friends. They are mainly private, and not a public match like dota 2 funmaps.
These custom lobby matches can not be ranked matches and are not as balanced as official matches, it’s up to the host to create a great balance, it can help using the balance button. Dota 2 custom games are often used for clanwars and leagues like the join-dota-league, but of course you can also host matches to play against bots and above all for the reason to play dota 2 offline if you have no internet connection!
All dota 2 custom game lobby settings explained:
If you are the host of a dota 2 lobby you have the following options:
- First of all on top of the sidebar, two divisions will appear radiant and dire. Select the side!
- Below the team separation, a dota coaching column will appear. If there are more than 5 players in a team, then they can act as a coach and guide the team.
- Below the coaching column, two options will appear: balanced shuffle and swap team. Balanced shuffle will create an equal level team.
- To open the settings for the dota 2 lobby, simply click on the wheel at the bottom! This settings window will appear:
- Six options will appear: game name (name of the lobby), game mode (mid only, three lanes etc.), lobby password (to avoid getting random players in a team, server location (local host), lobby visibility (visible to public or not) and enable cheats.
- Below these six options, there is an advance lobby setting option. It is not necessary to make changes in that option.
- Some dota 2 players like to broadcast their match. If you want to do the same thing below balanced shuffle and swap team. There is an option toggle broadcast channel. Click on it and select the desired channel.
Which custom game modes are available for dota 2 lobbys?
If you click on the play dota button, many different custom game options are available, let’s have a look which custom game mode you can play and what it is for!
When choosing a mode like practising with bots, you even have the option to play it solor or as a co-op! Both are a subcategory of practice with bots, but they are entirely different from each other. Both methods have a crucial role because one mode can make a dota 2 player face five abandons. Let us discuss both categories briefly! Рџ‰- Lobby for friends & clanwars
- Practice with bots (solo mode)
- Practice with bots (CO-OP mode)
1. How to play a dota 2 clanwar with a custom game lobby:
Besides playing with friends the custom game lobby is also perfect for leagues, dota 2 pro matches and custom tournaments from third-party websites:
A team of five people can sign up for a tournament or league and when the event starts, you will get the password. Now just click on the browse custom games button and search for the lobby, it can be password protected so that no one will join who is unwanted! Рџ‰ if you are the host, also always keep the ping in mind, to ensure great games.
2. How can I play dota 2 offline with bots?
The “solo mode” on the practice with bots tab, is usually utilized by those players who want to improve their gaming skills. Most pro players use it to enhance their strategies to defeat the enemy team.
Beginner players mostly use the solo mode to improve their abilities or to check out all the heroes and their characteristics. A solo mode is also a life-saving option for die-hard fans of dota 2 who wants to play dota all the time but they cannot play because of a wooden PC or crappy internet connection. Рџ‰ the solo mode can be played offline and it can be left anywhere anytime. Keep in mind that you have to log into steam with an active internet connection every two weeks or your account will be blocked temporarily.
The solo mode has multiple options in it. First of all, select the bot script: default bot, ranked matchmaking AI, and check workshop.
Then select the difficulty level of the bots according to your gaming skills. If you are a noob go for passive or easy bots otherwise unfair bots will beat your ass. Then select the desired team: radiant,В dire, or random.
3. What is the dota 2 bot “CO-OP” mode for?
The CO-OP mode is the perfect training area for friends and teammates, here you can train specific tactics, hero combos, lanes and item synergies which are too risky to play directly in matchmaking games. Dota 2 has so many heroes, give the ones you like a try. In the global and aoe ability post you can find great synergies and tips. A super cool way of doing this is to search for new dota 2 tactics and laning styles and to test it in CO-OP mode. Do it again and again until it is perfect, and then join the matchmaking games to stomp the enemies with the crazy new tactic.
To give an example you can search for tactics how to make roshan after a few minutes with two or three people! Рџ‰The co-op mode in practice with bots is also for those players who have penalty games. Abandons are maybe the most irritating feature of dota 2: however, it is also necessary to reduce trolling players from servers. Co-op mode is almost like matchmaking but a little bit different. In co-op, your allies are real gamers, but your enemies are bots.
Rest of the features are like solo mode, the same options will appear: select the script, select the difficulty level, and select team!
But keep in mind here to not leave the game until it ends! Otherwise, you will receive a gift from gaben again! РџЂ select the level of difficulty to easy or passive because it will increase the chances of winning. If your rank is good and it still gets hard even to beat passive bots then it is better for you to stay in low-polarity! Рџ‰
Sometimes it gets necessary to increase the win-rate: for this, it can also be efficient to use the co-op mode! In co-op mode, your win is in your hands. The more paper bots a player will select the high chances of winning it has.

General discussion7 slot dota 2?
What will happen if someday this can be possible. For example for every 80+ minute game there will be 1 more free slot for every hero I think this could be interesting.
Will this be broken or good what you think?
Its really a bit sad to watch C9 vs SFZ 3 hours and they still all have 6 slots with changeing 3-4 new item 24/7
Dunno would be fun tho and so op D:
Would be same shit though
People fill extra slot with one more dps/hp item and still fly around refreshers necros mantas etc on courier
Should be like a permanent buff you get when u kill roshan if the game is longer than 60 minutes long? This would prevent teams from turtling in base like SFZ vs C9. The late game would be centered around roshan just like the games that are pre 60 min long. Just my potato thinking XD
Extra slot for every 60 mins
Also either fix the sentry pooling or make it a proper feature
Or they simply learn how to play versus turtle, and it's fine.
If you add more item, hero such as medusa and sniper will have even easier time defending the throne
(not even mentionning kunka / ember)
Nooooo plz dont make games even longer 3 hours is long enough for me
I think could be ok buy the 7th slot
I want 6th slot in team, for 6v6 doto.
And I think you should be able to buy 7th slot for 10 000 gold.
@n4andza maybe 20k gold because if you have that much you deserve to spend it on more than buyback
Everytime the game goes past 60min, I get tired and usually throw. Best game part of the game is 10-35min. Late game 35-55min at max. Cant stand those hours infinite buyback/rat game.

Dota 2: patch 7.24 is live
Literally minutes after the end of the leipzig major, valve has a new surprise for us - patch 7.24. This update features some very important changes, so let’s check them out.
General changes
- The dota 2 heroes now have a neutral item slot and can carry or equip only one neutral item at a time.
- There is a neutral item stash in the fountain. Apart from being more convenient to use, this place allows you to teleport your neutral items directly to it.
- There are no more shrines.
- The backpack now has 3 slots instead of 4.
- Outpost are now located in the primary jungles.
- All GPM talents are removed from the game.
There are also various other small changes. In order to check everything that’s new, please read the entire change log.
Item changes
There are many item changes in this patch, most of which aimed at the neutral items. We will just highlight some of the more important ones.
- Clumsy net now has a 650 cast range and does not go through your own spell immunity.
- Vambrace is now an entire item (was only a recipe before). Also, you can toggle it between the different attributes.
- Fusion rune and phoenix ash have been removed from the game.
- Tango and quelling blade no longer kill wards.
Hero changes
As expected, some of the most popular heroes in this major are now slightly nerfed. On the contrary, others that didn’t see too much action have slights buffs in an attempt to force people to pick them more.
Slark, disruptor, treant, and tiny are just some of the names that are nerfed. Be sure to read the entire changelog in order to get a better idea of what happened. Nevertheless, we suggest you to start spamming as many pub games as possible. After all, that’s the easiest way to check out the new changes.
Conclusion
Be sure to check our daily recaps if you missed on any of the action from the leipzig major. We’ve tried to cover the most important things that happened every single day.
How to play dota 2: from beginner to a pro player – the definitive guide
The birth of a genre and rise of icefrog
With the advent of PC gaming countless game designers are pushing the envelope by creating new genres for the masses, and dota 2 is no exception. While many players would love to tell you that dota 2 is just a copy of league of legends, this is in fact one of the biggest misunderstandings in the MOBA community in general. MOBA stands for multiplayer online battle arena, and while riot games / league of legends may have coined that term as a genre the style of game has technically existed all the back on blizzard’s warcraft III: frozen throne as a custom game; they were just the first ones to bring the style to an upgraded platform engine. As valve saw the huge popularity that lol garnered as the first standalone, they decided to venture into the fray teaming up with the enigmatic icefrog to stake their claim as the second. Eventually the direction and style of marketing strategies would prove to be the defining difference. Riot with a more “hands on” approach with their LCS leagues and valve with a more community sourced “hands off” approach with later incarnations of the international after TI1’s $1 million prize pool which was unprecedented of at the time. The prize pool last year at TI8 topped $26 million with 1 st place winning upwards of $10 million.

Getting started with the basics
The basic concept of the game is pretty simple: kill the enemy’s ancient before they kill yours. 2 teams of 5 players each have a pool of over 100 unique heroes to choose from when the game begins with 3 different “types”. Agility, strength and intelligence, each bringing different elements throughout the course of the entire game. Strength heroes are usually your tanky bruisers that want to absorb damage and be in the front setting up fights; agility heroes want to buy items that efficiently increase their attack damage and attack speed though have generally lower HP; intelligence heroes can vary between aggressive magical burst and defensive abilities mixed with some disabling skills that are essential to any lineup. Each hero has 4 skills to level up with their strongest being the “ultimate” which generally defines the hero and figuring out how to use them all in tandem with your team becomes the hard part.
On the left is a picture of the game map. There are 3 lanes with defensive towers that attack enemy units in range where waves of NPC minions are spawned and travel down, killing them nets you gold and experience points. Gold allows you to purchase items from the shops (of which there are tons to choose) and experience leveling up your character and abilities. This is also where hero tactics start to take effect, strategies are implemented and the game starts progressing.
Dota 2 map
One of its biggest problems is the fact that the game is not new player friendly. There is a huge wall memorization that must be internalized and understood if you want to start climbing the ranks, and even before that learning all the game mechanics can seem nigh impossible at times. Though this could also be looked at as a strength in a way, since one of its main appeals is just how much brainpower you need. Humans have, and always will, want to use their brains to the fullest capacity. Dota 2 requires such masterful mix of mathematics, timings, variables, problem solving, predictions, theory crafting, teamwork, and intuition. Much like how the best go players are considered intelligent and noble, the best dota players in some aspect are considered geniuses. Making decisions in the span of milliseconds, millions of dollars on the line, hundreds of thousands of people watching, pressure mounting but somehow prevailing despite all odds.
Following the stories of teams and players is another reason why the community loves this game so much, every year getting the chance to chase the dream of winning the international and seeing the soul crushing emotions of those teams that are eliminated. This past year was no exception and could be hailed as the best TI ever. If you’re new to the scene and need a reason to fall in love with the game, just take a look at this video by thescoreesports as they do a fantastic job telling the story of the now legendary run by team OG and beloved captain n0tail:
This guide aims to teach you the application of important mechanics that are essential to every dota 2 player and give you an edge over other beginner players and prepare you for your calibration games. Just have an open mind and positive attitude from which to build your core skills/mechanics upon.
Newbie guide to controlling heroes
Heroes are the units controlled by each player to which there are 10 total in any given game. Each is unique and how they are utilized is up to the individual.
Hotkeys interface
This is a picture of how each heroes’ information will be displayed at any point in the game
On the left is the portrait displaying the level which in this case is level 7/25. Each level-up allows you to increase the strength of your skills, 4 times for regular skills and at level 6 you can skill your “ultimate” ability at a maximum of 3 times. Skills cost mana or MP points to cast and have a waiting period between cast times called a “cooldown”. Working around these cooldowns is a big part of the game and figuring out when to use them at the correct times. A bit to the right are your attack damage, armor, movement speed and 3 attribute values (we will cover these in a bit). Most players use QWER for their 4 skill slot button hotkeys
To the left of the skills you can see the “talent tree”. This allows you an option at level 10 and every 5 levels after to choose to between 2 talents that can provide more in-depth specialization that can bolster any number of things.
On the bottom you’ll see 2 bars (green and blue) which show your health point and mana points, with regeneration values /per second slightly to the right
At the top we have the “status bar” where you can see the icon for crystal maiden’s 3rd skill which provides global ally mana regeneration; positive buffs have the green circle, negative have the red circle around the icon.
To the right are the ever-important inventory slots, of which you have 6, with the additional 3 backpack slots. Item usage has always been a huge part of the game whether it be activating them at the right times or even just making sure you adapt item builds to certain games. Setting up efficient hotkeys and creating the muscle memory is very conducive with playing at a higher level. Minimizing hesitation through confusion by pressing the wrong buttons; ironing these kinds of mistakes out takes discipline and practice more information below
These are your hero values that include attack damage, armor, movement speed and attribute calculations. This was kept last as learning these exact values comes secondary to the previous numbers and will become more useful once you learn a bit more about the game
Making less unforced mistakes can give you an edge over other players through streamlined mechanics usage and improve at a much faster rate

Newbie guide to creeps and towers
Learning the different NPC units in dota is essential, not to say that you need to memorize every minute detail but a general understanding of them is necessary. For example being able to last hit them consistently or how to last hit them under a tower. Being able to consistently get gold and experience is the first step to improving your game as your journey progresses. Here is a list of the general ones:
Melee creeps
Ranged creeps
Siege creeps
Neutral creeps
Ancient creeps
Towers
Lane mechanics explained
Creep score
When going to a lane it is important to remember that how fast you farm your favorite item is up to your timings also called a “CS” or creep score. Creeps you kill add +1 to the left side, denies on the right. Out timing enemy heroes is essential when attempting to acquire farm on core heroes and even supports.
What is a deny? When executed correctly an exclamation mark is animated over the head of the unit denied as seen on the right. This is meant as a confirmation that your timing was perfect, and that the enemy hero(s) received minimum experience points and no gold. You now get + bonus gold when denying your own creeps.
Getting denies is generally good but taking one over a creep kill or multiple creep kills is not wise. Creep kills provide much more gold and exp so when making the choice between the two it is advised to try and go for the creep kill, but when denies present themselves without the danger of missing a “CS”
Pulling
Occasionally you will sometimes see players doing this action, but beware as it is a double edged sword and can be implemented improperly thus ending up benefiting the enemy.
How to pull creeps
When the lane is pushed all the way to the enemy tower, it will greatly help your carry if you “pull” the lane back as it brings the wave back towards your own tower where it is much safer to farm.
Hero strategy
As mentioned before there are 3 different categories that every hero falls into. All attributes give damage when hero attribute type matches
Strength – increases max HP and health regeneration as well as spell resistance
Intelligence – increases max MP and mana regeneration as well as spell damage
Agility – increases armor and basic attack speed as well as movement speed
Picking a hero is up to the player! And it is encouraged that you develop favorite ones as the hero will eventually become an extension of yourself from which to make changes into a dota game
Here are 3 in game hero guides by the well-respected torte de lini; 1 for each hero type. It is good to have backup heroes in case someone picks your favorite, being able to play 1 of each type will make you much more flexible than say someone who only plays intelligence ones. Another aspect of learning the game is knowing what heroes on the other team are capable of, so the ability able to predict what enemies will do is huge as well as learning the limits of each hero which will eventually allow you to push those limits.
Whether you want to play mid, carry your team, make plays from the offlane or support your team finding your best role is akin to a sort of spiritual journey so don’t be afraid to try them all and see which is your strongest affinity
To use these guides in game just click “SELECT” on the left-hand side
Sand king
A tanky hero with a stun and an escape tool on top of having a 2 button stun-ultimate combo, can go invisible and creates damaging seismic waves that damage the enemy.
Crystal maiden
As nuke heavy disabler she also provides bonus mana regeneration for the entire team and double values for yourself for more spell casting, helping all 3 lanes at the same time while alive
Sniper
A long-ranged damage dealer with a slow, and an ultimate with even longer range that can snipe enemy heroes that are fleeing.
Put your skills to the test against AI bots
Playing against computers for training has long been considered practice in multiplayers games, dota 2 is no different. Whether they’re the valve bots or even elon musk’s openai bots the core idea is the same only one pushes the extremes of cutting edge technology and science. Acclimating to the average player skill bracket is like climbing a wall built by these bots to test your abilities. Building your basics will start here and putting into practice the cumulative knowledge from this guide.
The more the merrier
If some of your friends play that can just add to the excitement when your stack of friends beats another stack of friends. Getting to practice with the same group of people consistently is another way to hasten your growth period a bit. It can be hard to sync up with random people all the time and already having those anonymous barriers broken down is a huge plus and also boosts communication. The best teams in the world have designated positions such a mid, carry, offlane or support; you should be on the lookout to see if you enjoy a certain position over others. Most players will have an affinity for at least 1 but that doesn’t mean you can’t play the others but picking and sticking to a role is the best targeted approach to improving. Having a friend who has a rank already can join your party as a coach and offer tips/advice to improve.
How to get into ranked and unranked games?
Take a look at some popular dota 2 streamers and youtubers such as BSJ or purge before playing your required 10 calibration games. These players’ insight can help you learn the ins and outs of certain heroes or positions and better prepare you for the hardships of ranked
On the right hand side click on play game.
Unranked and ranked options
After calibration you will be assigned a rank, but for some this takes the fun out of the game and should not be your main focus if you are still a noob at the game. Be objective about your skill level and rank should come later.
Want to play? Here’s what you need to know
Learning this game is still going to be hard. But after changing your settings to the guide’s, the overall goal to make it less frustrating and set you up with solid tested mechanics that make efficient use of the left hand cutting and lowering the chance for basic errors through unfamiliar button mapping. This is what will give you the ability to be able to better focus on what is happening on the screen and spend less time pressing wrong buttons.
It is also important when wanting to learn a hero, to use valve’s provided (for free) learning tools. At the top click on HEROES and select one.

Then click DEMO HERO by the skill icons.

Here you can test heroes out on a simulated mid lane and practice your hotkeys. This is the perfect environment to practice last hitting creeps, casting your spells and targeting enemy heroes.

Choosing your strategy to win
There are 3 principles that we’re going to cover as a crash course before you finally start your games. Concepts and terminology that you will again need to know. Pushing, farming and ganking.
Pushing: A concept that seems simple but eventually can become a headache. Taking towers is a form of pushing as it requires a siege, thus requiring multiple waves of creeps; taking too long can allow the enemy to group up and take advantage of bad positioning. Pushing alone can sometimes leave you to be caught out so there are bad times to push as well if your team is on the other side of the map. Occasionally the enemy will be pushing at the exact same time as you, so what do you do?
Farming: widely considered the act/period of time where heroes are last hitting creeps. Also when needing to accrue farm in lane before making moves
Ganking: the act when 2 or more heroes collectively kill another hero(s). The word teamfighting and ganking can sometimes overlap but function in the same meaning if substituted.
Lineups and team compositions
Carry – usually farming in the “safe lane” that needs items before becoming strong and taking over a game.
Mid – solo hero that gets the fastest levels and gold, can take over a game early.
Offlane – hero in the dangerous lane that barely gets any farm or levels without help. Can also be a solo lane like mid.
Support – generally a hero that makes plays on the map, ie helping mid secure runes. Needs gold over 5 position.
Support – dedicated support hero, buys wards and using abilities in a mostly defensive manner. Lowest farmed units in the game
