This article gives you a few pointers and some information about how things work in most casinos and public poker rooms. Let's get started with a major part of any casino experience -- the staff.
One of the most important things to remember is that the staff of a casino or poker room is there to make your visit as comfortable as possible because they want you to come back. If you can't find the card room or if you have any questions at all, don't hesitate to ask a staff member.
The dealer is also part of the staff. If you are sitting down at a poker game in a casino or card room for the first time, tell the dealer that it is your first time and ask them to please keep an eye on you to make sure you aren't doing anything incorrectly. You may be amazed at how helpful and useful someone can be when you show them a little respect and ask for their help. Many times, especially at the lower-limit tables, other players are also helpful.
Also, most poker rooms have a place to sign a waiting list for a particular game. Some have a white board with the games and limits available along with the waiting players' initials. Others will just have someone who writes initials or names on a sheet of paper. The card room calls the next person on the list when a seat becomes available. Simply ask whoever is in charge of the board -- or a staff member -- to place you on the list for all of the games you are willing to play. If you are in a small poker room with no visible sign-up area, ask a dealer how to enter a game.

How to play poker in a casino

If you've never played poker in a casino, it may seem intimidating compared to a night at your home game, but not to worry! Once you sit down at your first casino poker table, you'll realize it's not so different and you'll be raking in the chips before you know it. Here's how to get started!
Step 1: get on a list
The first thing you're going to need to do is to sign up on the queue or list for a game with the poker host or manager. There will be a podium in almost every casino poker room where there's a list either on a board or, more likely, on video monitors that list every game going on and who is waiting to sit down. If you're not sure where to go, just ask a waitress or any other casino employee. They will point you in the right direction.
Once you locate the sign-up area, you can ask if any games are "open" or have seats and they'llfor you know -- otherwise, you'll want to sign up on the list for a few games. They should have a list of what kinds of games -- you'll always find hold'em, but there maybe games of omaha or seven-card stud too. They'll also list the limits, or betting amounts, for each game and whether it is a limit or no limit game. For your first outing, it's probably best to stick to the lowest limit tables, which will likely be a $1/2 no limit hold'em game or a $2/4 or $3/6 limit hold'em game.
Give the poker host your initials and tell him which lists you'd like to be added to and voila! You're done.
Step 2: buy your chips
While you're waiting for your initials to be called, it's a good idea to find the cage and get some chips. The people working the cage know just what kind of chips you'll need for your game so you can just tell them you are buying into a $1/2 no-limit game or a $3/6 limit game and they will give you the right chips. I recommend buying $100 for either of these games, but you can also check what the minimum buy-in is with the poker host and get that amount. If you do need more chips, you can always buy more at the table, but most places prefer that you sit down with chips instead of holding up the game and getting your first buy-in at the table.
The exception to this rule is if they call for a brand-new game or table. Then they usually will have a dealer sitting there with racks of chips you can buy. And many casinos have chip-runners who will get your chips for you. All that said, there is never a downside to having your chips already.
You've signed up on the queue at the poker room, now the real fun begins.
Step 3: sit down and play!
When you hear your initials called for your game, tell the poker host to "lock it up" for you if you want that seat. He will point you to your table and the dealer will let you know what seat is yours if it's not obvious (it'll be the one without someone in it or chips in front of it).
The dealer will ask you if you want to "post" -- that means put in the big blind and get dealt into the next hand right away. I recommend saying no and waiting until the big blind reaches you to start playing. It will give you some time to get used to things and observe the action before jumping in.
Once you've posted that first big blind, that's it, you're officially playing poker in a casino.
Step 4: remember the rules and maintain good poker manners
Once you're in the game, you'll want to follow all the rules of poker etiquette you'd follow at a home game, but there are some rules you'll want to pay more attention to you might skip at home:
- Remember to say "raise" if you are planning on raising. String bets are not allowed.
- When you fold, make sure it's obvious and push your cards towards the dealer.
- Casino poker is always played for table stakes, meaning you cannot bet more than you have on the table in chips at the time. In some casinos, $100 bills play if they are on the table, but check first before assuming this is true.
- Remember to tip. Poker dealers and waitresses make a living on tips. Read more about tipping poker dealers here.
- Do not talk on your phone at the table. It's rude and most casinos don't allow it.
Step 5: taking breaks and calling it a night
If you need to take a phone call, go to the bathroom, or just clear your head, you can get up at any time as long as you're not in a hand. Just stand up and take your time. If you miss your blinds, you'll return to a token letting you know you'll need to post your blind to re-join, or you can wait until the big blind reaches you again to come back into the game.
If you're done playing for the night, just tell the dealer to deal you out and leave. You are not obligated to stay any length of time -- you can play 10 minutes or 10 hours -- it's up to you.
Casino poker for beginners: getting into the game
The series of articles "casino poker for beginners" is intended for people who have played poker online and/or in home games, but have little or no experience playing in a “brick-and-mortar” or at an online casino.
Casinos have rules, procedures, and points of etiquette that can trip up players on their first few visits — or at least confuse and mystify them.
I hope to explain these to you in advance so that you don’t get intimidated or embarrassed.
Understanding them might also keep you from losing money by inadvertently breaking a rule during the game.
The articles in this series will focus specifically on how poker in casinos differs from what you have learned from playing casino poker games like three-card poker online or at friends’ home games, particularly in what might be termed its “procedural” aspects.
I work from the assumption that readers have enough experience under their belts at one or both of those other types of poker games to feel comfortable playing them and would like to try adding casino poker to their repertoire.
For this first installment, I’ll give you a step-by-step guide for getting into a cash game. I’ll cover entering a casino poker tournament in a later column.
Figuring out what games are available
So you’ve taken the trip to las vegas, atlantic city, tunica, los angeles, or any of the other many poker destinations that are now available in the U.S. And around the world. You’ve selected which poker room to patronize. Now what?
Your first step is to know what games are available.
Poker rooms vary in how they communicate game availability to would-be players. Most now have a large-screen TV listing the games and the names of any people waiting to play. Some use a manually updated white board.
The smallest rooms sometimes still use one person behind a desk with a simple piece of paper, and you have to ask what games are available. But let’s say that by one of these methods you learn that the choices are listed as follows:
- 2-4 limit hold’em
- 4-8 limit hold’em
- 1-2 no-limit hold’em
- 2-5 no-limit hold’em
- 4-8 omaha-8
Often you’ll see a number in parentheses after such listings, which tells you how many tables of each game are in play. Some places display the actual table numbers. (each table in a poker room has a fixed identification number.) if there are names under the game heading, that tells you who is waiting to play.
What the numbers mean
The stakes of the game are communicated by the pair of numbers in front of the name of the game. Confusingly, the numbers mean different things for different games.
In hold’em and omaha (i.E., the so-called “flop games”), fixed-limit games are named by the size of the bets you can make. For example, “4-8 limit hold’em” means that the bets and raises are each $4 for the first two betting rounds of each hand (before the flop and on the flop), and $8 on the turn and river.
The blinds in these games are typically one-half of those values, or $2 and $4 in this example, though some casinos use different structures. Stud games (and draw games, if you can ever find one) follow the same convention — the numbers in the name of the game represent allowable bet sizes.
But just when you think you understand that, you discover that no-limit games are listed differently. “1-2 no-limit hold’em” does not mean that the bets are $1 and $2 — that would violate the whole concept of a “no-limit” structure. Instead, these games are named by the size of the two blinds, in this case the small blind being $1 and the big blind $2.
To make it even more confusing, a few casinos — most notably the largest ones in southern california — eschew the conventions I’ve just described in favor of a bewildering hodge-podge of buy-ins and blinds as the titles of their games.
For example, a “$40 NL” game will mean no-limit hold’em with buy-in of exactly $40 — no more and no less — with blinds unstated but understood to be $1 and $2. There are other variations used in these places that are too numerous to detail here. But don’t worry — just tell them that it’s your first time there, and they’ll be happy to explain what the words, numbers, and abbreviations mean. Just about everywhere else, the explanations above will serve you well.
Buying in and taking a seat
Okay, so let’s say you’ve decided which of the offered games you’d like to play. Now just approach the person poised to greet you at the entrance to the poker room and tell him or her what you’re interested in. You will either be put on the waiting list for a opening, or, if you’re lucky, directed or escorted directly to a vacant seat in an active game.
If you have to wait, be sure that you don’t wander off to someplace where you can’t hear your name being called. Some poker rooms now offer to call or text your cell phone when it’s your turn, in which case you’re free to go do something else while you wait. However, I think it’s a better idea to stick around and watch (from a respectable distance) a game of the type you plan to play, in order to get a sense for what’s happening.
Next you’ll need to convert some cash into chips. But how much? The amount for which you can or must buy in to a game is related to the sizes of the blinds and/or bets, but not in any obvious or standardized way. Most commonly, the buy-in is capped at 100, 150, or 200 times the amount of the big blind in no-limit games. However, you can find poker rooms with substantially smaller buy-in caps, and some with no caps at all.
There’s no reliable way to figure this out on your own; you just have to ask an employee. Limit games are often officially uncapped, but you’d be looked at oddly if you bought into a fixed-limit game for more than about 50 big blinds, because stack sizes are not usually an important factor in how the game plays.
Let’s suppose you’re going to play $2/$4 limit hold ’em, and you’ve decided to buy in for the maximum this casino allows for this game, which is, say, $200. There are four different ways you might exchange your cash for poker chips.
- The person at the front podium who signs you in might also serve as the room’s cashier.
- He or she might direct you to a separate cashier’s “cage” to purchase chips.
- You might be instructed to buy your chips from the dealer when you sit down.
- After you take your seat, they might have a “chip runner” take your money and bring you chips.
Again, which method a given place uses (and it can change depending on how busy they are) is not usually obvious, even to experienced players — you just have to ask.

Omaha high
Omaha is similar to texas hold’em in some ways, but the players receive four hole cards, and the hand must consist of exactly two cards from the player’s hole cards and exactly three cards from the board. (in texas hold’em the hands can consist of any combination of board and hole cards.)

Omaha hi/lo
Omaha hi/lo, or omaha eight (played with an ‘eight or better’ qualifier for low), is offered in limit, pot limit and no limit action.
5 card omaha and 5 card omaha hi/lo
5 card omaha and 5 card omaha hi/lo are similar in some ways to regular omaha games, but with a fifth hole card dealt to each player pre-flop. 5 card omaha games are available at pot limit and no limit tables, while hi/lo games can be played at limit, pot limit and no limit tables.
Courchevel and courchevel hi/lo
Courchevel is exciting form of 5 card omaha, where the first flop card is dealt face up at the beginning of the hand. Courchevel hi/lo is a popular split pot form of omaha poker, where each player is dealt five cards pre-flop. You can play courchevel and courchevel hi/lo at limit, pot limit and no limit tables on pokerstars.
Seven card stud
Until the surge in popularity of texas hold’em, seven card stud was the most popular poker game. You can still find plenty of options at the seven card stud tables at pokerstars, available in a wide range of limits.
Seven card stud hi lo
The split pot version of seven card stud hi/lo offers a twist to this classic game. Available in limit action, if you like seven card stud or omaha hi/lo, look into the seven card stud hi/lo tables.
Razz (7 card stud low)
If you think you can never make a hand, razz is the game for you. This version of seven-card lowball allows you to shoot for the absolute worst five-card hand and still win.

2-7 triple draw & 2-7 single draw
Deuce to seven triple draw and deuce to seven single draw are lowball games that force you to make the worst possible low hand. 2-7 games have different rules for reading the hands, so you should review the rules before playing!
Badugi
Badugi is a form of draw poker, where the object of the game is to make the best low hand of different suits, from the four cards you are dealt. Badugi has some interesting different rules from other poker games, so you should review the rules before playing!
Pokerstars fusion
This format mixes elements of texas hold'em and omaha. Start with two hole cards and receive more as the hand continues. If you play through to the river, you’ll have four hole cards and five community cards from which to make your best five-card hand.
Showtime holdвђ™em
Showtime hold’em plays almost identically to texas hold’em, with the exception that every card folded by any player remains face-up and visible for the rest of the hand. This includes all cards folded before and after the flop.

Peter zanoni gibt das ende seiner concord card casinos bekannt

Mit großem bedauern sehe ich mich veranlasst bekanntzugeben, dass ich mit dem heutigen tage die concord card casinos endgültig schließen muss“, so der gründer der casinos, peter zanoni, heute in einer mitteilung an seine mitarbeiterinnen.
Zwar sind noch verfahren am europäischen gerichtshof und am österreichischen verfassungsgerichtshof anhängig, aber tatsache ist, dass es sich um eine auseinandersetzung „david gegen goliath“ handelt und die ressourcen, das ende dieser verfahren abzuwarten, nicht mehr vorhanden sind. „ich habe das fünffache der bruttoeinnahmen an abgaben zu leisten, und die höchstgerichte wollen bislang nicht erkennen, dass es sich dabei um eine erdrosselungsabgabe handelt“, so zanoni.
