London casinos
The heart of the UK casino industry is based in london. Historically, some of the wealthiest people on the planet have come to london to conspicuously blow their cash, going back to the days of sir john aspinall, the original playboy casinos and a host of other big names.
These days the london scene can be split into two, with the “big 6” at the very top of the punting tree, still hosting the biggest players in the world, albeit with a bit more competition these days from the likes of macau, vegas and other gambling hotspots. These six sites – which generally are rather exclusive and certainly will have a dress code (unless you are super-minted) – are les ambassadeurs, the ritz, the clermont, crockfords, aspinalls and maxim’s.
Most of the other 20 london casino are a bit less exclusive, and some don’t tend to bother with a strict dress code (although don’t bother heading wearing beachwear – not that that’s very practical most of the time in london anyway.) there’s still a bit of a hierarchy – playboy, the barracuda and the sportsman for example would tend to be a little more refined – while sites like aspers stratford, the empire and the G casino piccadilly would more closely resemble what you might find in your local high street outside london.

Rank casino piccadilly
One of the ‘big 2’ casinos groups in the UK (genting being the other), rank, trading as grosvenor casinos, has evolved over the years from a collection of different acquisitions with a variety of different names. Clubs that used to be called soames, sergeant yorkes, tiberius and a few other names are now either grosvenor (older sites) or G casinos. Most of their newer sites are on the edge of a town or city centre, and sport beautiful decor, a very comfy bar area (with funky light displays on the ceiling) and usually a major poker room.
The nature of the business is such that they have much the same restaurant and menu in most of their sites, and their play points loyalty card goes across pretty much all of their operations. Grosvenor recently (early 2013) bought out gala casinos, and will be on their way to rebranding all 19 sites that they picked up.
The casino business is just part of the rank group, which used to be a huge leisure comglomerate including businesses like butlins, odeon and lots of others, but now just comprises the grosvenor casino and mecca bingo businesses. On the web you will find grosvenor casinos online and mecca bingo online, which are apparently a growing part of rank’s business.

Located in the heart of the west end, grosvenor casino piccadilly is one of the most exciting and enjoyable venues london has to offer, and is packed with loads of games and other facilities. Regardless of the casino game you enjoy, this casino is likely to have it, and what’s more, players will also find a great array of different stakes. So, before you visit the grosvenor casino piccadilly, why not take a look through the review below?
- See the wide variety of games offered
- Find out the good and bad points of this casino
- Learn about the history of the grosvenor brand
A complete selection of casino games
You’ll find any game you want at this casino, as it quite simply has it all. But what would you expect from one of the capital’s most popular casinos? The main floor has all of the table games, which include roulette, blackjack and slots, plus it also has a number of poker tables, at which cash games are nearly always found. The main floor is then surrounded by slot machines, making it really easy to switch between the different types of games. It should be mentioned that this casino can get extremely busy though, and sometimes you’ll have to wait to get a seat on a table.
When it comes to poker, experienced players will be in their element. This is because the grosvenor casino piccadilly attracts a number of new players, who can provide some easy money. Tournaments are occasionally run and, like the other table games, you might need to wait for a while to get a seat at one of the two cash game poker tables during busier periods. It should also be mentioned that this casino is right next door to a mecca bingo hall, in case you fancy a change of gambling at some point.
Located in the heart of the west end, grosvenor casino piccadilly is one of the most exciting and enjoyable venues london has to offer.
The other facilities at grosvenor casino piccadilly
If you want to grab a bite to eat at this casino, you can – however don’t expect yourself to be sampling fine cuisine. This is because the restaurant at this casino is basic, offering favourites such as burgers and chips. The setting is nice when you sit down to eat though, and provides a nice alternative to the hustle and bustle of the main casino floor. Of course, the fact that this casino is in the west end means that there are plenty of restaurants within walking distance though, should you fancy treating yourself to something more upmarket.
The bar is much more impressive than the restaurant, and becomes a hive of activity during the evening. This means that grosvenor casino piccadilly is a great place to visit even if you don’t fancy gambling. All live sport is shown there, including every major sporting event, and a great range of different drinks is on offer. It might be a good idea to avoid any alcohol if you plan on gambling though, as drinking and gambling really don’t mix. As with the restaurant, there are plenty of other bars in the area if you want to step out of the casino for a while.
The pros and cons of grosvenor casino piccadilly
The biggest advantage to this casino is its location. This is because it is right in the heart of london, making it incredibly easy to get to, and also close to many of the capital’s other major attractions. In fact, it is only around a minute from piccadilly circus tube station. The range of games also has to be considered a great plus point, although some other casinos in london do have more tables. Finally, the fact that it represents a full entertainment experience is really great, as those who aren’t so keen on gambling can still have loads of fun in the vibrant bar area.
The big downside to the casino is the restaurant, which really doesn’t offer food on par with most other casinos in london. It could be that you prefer a place where you can simply grab a quick, unpretentious bite to eat, but for many it will be a disappointment. The problem is solved by simply walking a couple of minutes from the casino though, as you’ll see loads of fantastic restaurants when you do.
A history of grosvenor casino piccadilly
As the name suggests, this is a casino run by the giant grosvenor casinos group, whch also own a huge number of other casinos in the UK. They came to life in 1970 and have since been at the forefront of the UK casino industry, pioneering schemes such as loyalty cards and innovative poker tournaments. In fact, they hold the record for the largest tournament ever held outside the USA, which attracted a massive 3.394 players. Crazily enough, they also hold the record for the highest poker tournament, which was held at the top of mount snowden.
Grosvenor casino piccadilly was started in 2007, however there had been a casino at the site previously, as this was initially the site for the hard rock casino. This happened after owners rank decided to rebrand the business, after selling off their hard rock casinos in the USA. The casino still retains elements of the original hard rock casino though, giving it an individual vibe and uniqueness when compared to other grosvenor casinos.
The ritz club casino
The ritz club casino is an exclusive club located in an old building in the heart of london’s piccadilly. It is the home of the rich and famous and its website recounts stories of its renowned clientele. It will appeal to connoisseurs of opulence and elegance and prides itself on its high standards of service. There is a charge for life membership (contact casino for details). The main gaming salon is situated in the former ballroom of the ritz hotel.
The casino is open to all guests staying at hotel but, of course, there is a myriad of hotels to choose from in london within walking distance of the casino or in the surrounding area. The ritz offers a luxury limousine service for its members but for those using public transport, the nearest underground stations are at green park (next to the casino) and piccadilly circus, less than a five minute walk away. Taxis are always available from the ritz hotel’s own cab rank or can be hailed in the street. In addition it is well connected by road and rail links for quick and easy access to all london airports.
The casino gaming floor is across two levels where you will find eight roulette tables, four blackjack, two three card poker and five baccarat tables in the main gaming salon, the carmen room or in the amber room. They have a minimum stake of £5 for roulette and £25 for blackjack, baccarat and three card poker - contact casino for details of maximum stakes but suffice to say they are high! Private rooms are also available on request.
The club's restaurant offers award-winning cuisine and is known internationally for the highest standards of service. In addition, the club offers an excellent concierge service which procures tickets for top shows, sports and entertainment. The bar has a wide collection of champagnes, whiskeys and cocktails.

What is the dress code at a casino?
Not sure what to wear to one of our casinos? Don’t worry – it’s not all bow ties and pressed trousers, at grosvenor casinos we’re happy for our customers to dress smart casual and be comfortable.
What should I wear to a casino?
You don’t need to dress up like james bond – think about how you’d dress to go to a nice bar and that’s ideal. Obviously if you do want to wear a bond-esque suit that’s fine, just steer clear of scruffy workwear or sports clothes.
For everything you need to know about grosvenor casino’s dress code, take a look at our helpful video which takes you through the “dos and donts”.
What is the official dress code at grosvenor casinos?
Grosvenor casinos are all relaxing and sophisticated environments for people to play their favourite casino games – but we’re not too strict with the dress code. The only unacceptable clothing at our casinos are items like sportswear or scruffy clothing, as standard. The dress code is the same at all grosvenor casinos across the country.
Can I wear trainers in a casino?
Grosvenor casinos’ dress code is smart casual, which means that while trainers are acceptable they shouldn’t be dirty or tattered. Similarly, jeans are fine, although tracksuit bottoms are not suitable. If you’re thinking of visiting your local grosvenor casino for the first time, don’t worry about wearing smart shoes – if you’re more comfortable in trainers, they’re fine too.
Is the dress code different in the poker rooms?
You can certainly wear baseball caps, hoodies and sunglasses like the poker pros do on TV – that’s all fine. You would be encouraged to dress slightly smarter if venturing onto the main casino floor though. The advice above would then apply – smart casual is the best bet.
If you fancy coming along to try a hand of blackjack or to have a spin on roulette, you can find your closest local casino here. If you’d rather start out by playing online casino you can sign up today and start playing one of huge range of great games.

Blackjack
Always take a card on 11!
Blackjack is an incredibly popular, exciting and easy card game to play. The object is to have a hand with a total value higher than the dealer’s without going over 21. Kings, queens, jacks and tens are worth a value of 10. An ace has the value of 1 or 11. The remaining cards are counted at face value.
How to play
Place a bet in the betting areas marked on the table.
You and fellow players are dealt two cards each whilst the dealer is dealt one face up.
Decide whether you wish to ‘draw’ or ‘stay’ based on the total of your cards. You can continue to draw cards until you are happy with your hand.
Once all players have taken their turn the dealer draws another card for their hand. If the dealer’s cards total 16 or less, they must draw until they reach 17 or more.
All bets are paid even money with the exception of blackjack.
Rules
If the dealer’s hand is higher than your hand without going over 21, you lose.
If your hand is higher than the dealer’s hand without going over 21, you win.
If the two hands have an equal value, it’s a tie.
All winning bets are paid 1 to 1 but when you get blackjack you get paid out at 3 to 2.
Blackjack side bets
Perfect pairs
put a stake on the perfect pairs box. If your first two cards are a pair, you win. Pairs will either be a mixed pair (5:1, 1 red and 1 black), a coloured pair (10:1, both red or black but different suits), a perfect pair (30:1, both of the same suit) or suited trips (50:1, a pair of the same colour that also matches the dealer’s first card).
21 + 3
put a stake on the 21 + 3 box and if your first two cards and the dealer’s first card make either a flush (all 3 cards the same suit), a straight (all 3 cards in sequence) or 3 of a kind (all 3 cards the same rank) you win 9 times your stake.
Top 3
put a stake on the top 3 box and if your first two cards and the dealer’s first card make either a straight flush (180:1, all 3 cards the same suit and consecutive rank), 3 of a kind (90:1, all 3 cards same rank) or 3 of a kind suited (270:1, all 3 cards same rank & suit) you win.
£5 and £10 minimum bet tables with £1k maximum.
£25 minimum bet tables with £3k maximum.
£100 minimum bet tables with £5k maximum.
£500 minimum bet tables with £10k maximum.
21+3 | £5 – £500
perfect pair | £5 – £100
top 3 | £1- £10 on any table under £25 minimum

Blackjack 11′s progressive jackpot
An exciting new side bet exclusively at the hippodrome.
Place a £5 stake for your chance of winning the progressive jackpot.
If your first two cards total 11, you win:
Perfect jackpot
your first two cards are ace & king of spades and the dealer’s first two cards total 11. This wins the progressive jackpot.
Jackpot (£250)
your first two cards are ace & king of spades and the dealer does not make 11 with their first two cards.
Suited 11s (£60)
your first two cards total 11 and are of the same suit.
Coloured 11s (£50)
your first two cards total 11 and are the same colour.
Mixed 11s (£35)
your first two cards total 11 and are alternate colours.
LEX LIVE 3: your guide to london
From april 17 – 26 2020, pokerstars ambassador lex veldhuis will be hosting the third edition of lex live at the aspers casino in westfield stratford city.
Whether it’s recalling all of the hotels that you wanted to buy on mayfair and park lane in your earlier years playing monopoly, watching scenes of the royal family at buckingham palace, cheering one of the city’s football teams or laughing to episodes of fleabag, we’ve all had a piece of london in our lives at some point.
If you haven’t had the chance to visit this metropolis yet, then there’s no better time than for lex live 3.
The 10-day festival runs from april 17 – 26 2020, and here’s a guide to england’s capital if you’re planning to visit for the first time.
HOW DO I GET TO LONDON?
If you’re flying into heathrow airport, keep in mind that it is the third busiest in the world, so give yourself plenty of time to get through it. Gatwick airport is smaller and less busy, but it’s still a london airport, so expect some hustle and bustle.
Both airports are linked to london via express train services, with heathrow taking you to london paddington station, and gatwick taking you to london victoria station.
If you’re arriving via the eurostar, you’ll be pulling into london at st pancras international.
From there, the most efficient and budget way to get around in london is using the tube. It’s the city’s version of the subway or metro and connects most of metropolitan london, turning it into an underground maze of exceptional transport throughout central london town. Wherever you need to go, you can be sure there’s a line on the tube to get you there.

HOW DO I SEE THE SIGHTS?
The easiest way to squeeze in the major sights in town is to jump on one of the many tour buses, including the infamous double-decker buses, but it’s actually possible to see the sights in one day while on foot (with the occasional ride on the tube).
Being such a huge city, the main attractions are surprisingly closer to each other than you may think, and if not, there will be an underground station nearby.
It will be springtime in england when lex live 3 takes place, with average temperatures of 12 degrees celsius (54 degrees fahrenheit) and a low of 4 °C (39 °F). Keep in mind that england is certainly not known for its sunshine, so be sure to bring some warm clothes just in case.
Here’s a list of just some of the many things to see and do while in town during lex live 3:
Leicester square — a taste of the west end’s cinema and entertainment capital, described as one big, youthful party.
Piccadilly circus — connected to leicester square, this is london’s version of new york’s times square, a busy thoroughfare of london’s west end.
Buckingham palace — a jaw-dropping dose of gargantuan royal residency. There’s never a time during the day when there aren’t groups of people outside of the gates snapping pictures. For £17.50 you can get a tour inside the property, but be sure to go before oct. 3 since that’s when they close for the season.
St james’s park — a peaceful escape from the city buzz as you walk through from buckingham palace at one end of the park, to the ritz at the other.
River thames — the mammoth sights continue with the waterside such as big ben, the london eye, houses of parliament, and tower bridge a little further down.
WHERE IS GOOD FOR SHOPPING IN LONDON?
Harrods — situated in the fancy knightsbridge area, harrods is the most extravagant department store you will probably ever seen. It’s unlikely you will open your wallet, but it’s definitely worth a look.
Oxford street — the world-famous shopping district that’s much more affordable for the average person than harrods. Here is where you’ll find all of the mainstream brands.
Carnaby london — A dainty, boutique shopping and nightlife district close to leicester square that is a refreshing contrast from the grandness of the surrounding areas.
Portobello road — this street is filled with one of the many markets around london. This one is in the heart of notting hill and is considered the most popular for vintage items.
Camden market — another world-famous market in london, this is for those after something more alternative.
ARE THERE ANY SPECIAL EVENTS ON IN LONDON DURING LEX LIVE 3?
Underbelly festival — april (dates to be confirmed): the underbelly festival combines live entertainment with alfresco drinks and dining right on london’s south bank. For circus, theatre, cabaret, comedy, music and children’s shows, make sure you check it out.
The queen’s birthday — april 21: if you’ve been binging the crown on netflix, then you might know that while t he queen’s official birthday is in june, her actual birthday is 21 april. Expect some royal festivities, including gun salutes being fired in central london to mark the occasion: one usually takes place at hyde park and another at the tower of london.
London marathon — april 26: if you’ve busted the lex live 3 main event and need to burn some energy, the world-famous london marathon will be taking place on sunday, april 26. For info on how you can sign up or where you can go and watch, click here.
