Are online casinos fair or are they rigged?

One of the biggest concerns that many online casino players experience when playing at online casinos or else visiting a brick and mortar casino, is whether the casino or the casino games like slots and blackjack they are playing function in a fair manner.

If players suss that a casino is being disadvantageous by reducing any chances of winning, then many casinos would have closed by now. That being said, we know too well that over a lengthy period of time, the house edge comes to play. The longer you play, the more likely the casino will make a profit.

Are online casinos fair or are they rigged, why are online casinos rigged.

Let’s delve deeper into the subject.

Are online casinos rigged?

While you might be in it with the aim of winning some money, online casinos’ main goal is to make a neat profit from customers who love to gamble online. Laws and regulations are in place with the aim of making sure that online casinos operate in a fair and legal manner.

Every now and again, a gambler suspects that casino games or the casino itself is rigged. There are other theories being raised by gamblers. Such as if you play for longer periods of time you will strike it lucky or perhaps, that casinos are constantly trying to lure new players with enticing jackpots but without dropping.

However, the one major complaint that we hear all the time is that players can never win. While there is the house edge (aka house advantage) in place, it is impossible that players never win as otherwise casinos would go bust.

Since casino games apply random number generators to their casino games, every spin or bet is random and has the same odds as your previous or future bets. You need to keep in mind that luck plays an important role in casinos games and that you also need to take account of your own bad decisions especially when you are playing table games.

Your bad decisions can cause you loss after loss.

How are online casinos fair and trustworthy?

We are definitely not implying that all online casinos out there are safe and trustworthy. On the contrary, you should always look out for signs that a casino is indeed secure and trustworthy.

When a casino applies for a gambling license, it undergoes several tests and scrutiny by licensing bodies. They are in fact, constantly being monitored and audited to make sure that players are not treated unfairly in any way, manner, or form.

Since they are constantly dealing with gambling authorities and the government, there are rules and regulations in place to ensure fairness.

Independent testing: the good news for you as a player is that each online casino undergoes rigorous testing to ensure that it is just. All casino games use the service of a random number generator that ensures that each bet is independent from the other and that they essentially carry the same odds as the next one.

How to know if an online casino is safe?

Are online casinos fair or are they rigged, why are online casinos rigged.

Don’t just sign up to any old online casino. If you are going to part from your personal and financial information, you want to make sure that it is trustworthy and secure.

For starters, look for casinos that are licensed by leading jurisdictions, such as malta, gibraltar and the united kingdom. There is a reason for this. Such gaming jurisdictions enforce upon casinos specific gaming requirements to make sure that each player has the same chance.

One of these gaming requirements is the RNG amongst many other security features. These are all in place before the casino ever goes live or adds its first slot game. Look towards the bottom of your online casino’s page to see if one of the aforementioned reputable organisations is listed, or if it has received any e-gaming awards from renowned organisations.

Another way to know if an online casino is safe, is to read casino reviews online and to see what other players have said about their experience. Remember, that if you don’t research the casino properly, you will be gambling away your personal and financial information, so it’s best to run your research beforehand.

Additionally, go over the casino’s security policies and read the terms and conditions of casinos, to see what would happen to your personal information once you have signed up. Are they passing information to any third parties?

After you have done all your research and feel safe in the knowledge that the online casino of your choice is secure, it might be worth looking into their game selection as well as bonus structure. Do you want to sit down to play at a casino with a very limited selection of games? Are the games of low or high variance?

Rigged online casinos: dispelling a gambling myth

How many times have you anted up in the casino online arena and heard someone say: "this game is rigged!" ever since online gambling became a booming industry, a small number of people have been quick to suggest that something is awry. These people will state, as if it was fact, that online casino games are rigged.

Although these people's exact reasoning isn't clear, their implication is: the online casino operator is deliberately manipulating the odds. Of course, it will come as no surprise that these potentially libellous accusations always come in the wake of a significant loss. While this fact doesn't prove that the accusations are inaccurate, it does give you some indication as to why you will often hear the phrase "online casinos are rigged."

Fortunately, we don't need to rely on this emotional bias to discredit this claim. In fact, we can rely on two logical arguments to swiftly dispel the myth that licensed and regulated online casinos are rigged to favour the house.

It's all about numbers & probability

Aside from losing money and getting emotional about it, casino naysayers often claim that certain games are rigged because they see something that they think can't be possible. As humans, we naturally look for patterns in order to understand things, so when we see something that we believe constitutes a pattern we take note.

In the casino online world, the people who claim the industry is rigged will point to instances where a set of results looked odd. For example, if a player is taking a shot at roulette and they see the number 8 roll in six times in a row, they will identify this as a pattern that proves the casino has rigged the game.

Unfortunately, this line of thinking is misguided. Although a run of six 8s in a row is improbable, it's not impossible and that's the key. Each spin of the roulette wheel is known as an independent event and that means each previous result has no bearing on the future. Therefore, according to the laws of probability, it's entirely possible for six 8s to spin in and not be the result of a rigged casino.

Of course, while you won't often see results such as this, it can happen and that's the important thing to understand. Although it's not impossible that an unregulated casino online could have a rigged system, it's highly unlikely. Moreover, the fact that certain results might look odd doesn't prove anything other than the reality of probability.

When the odds are stacked against you

If you understand how casino games work, you'll quickly realise that a casino doesn't have to cheat to come out ahead. In fact, casino games favour the house by their very nature. Whether you play roulette, blackjack, craps, baccarat, or any other casino staple, the game is set up so that the casino pays out less money than they take in.

You've probably heard the expression that the only way to win playing casino games is to open your own casino. Naturally, as we mentioned earlier, anything can happen over the short term. The same outcomes that cause some players to cry foul can cause other to jump for joy. It all depends on where you've placed your bets.

Random number generators - keeping things random

If you're still not convinced and don't like to put your faith in abstract concepts such as probability, then there is hard evidence that legit online casinos aren't rigged in the form of random number generators.

All licensed casino online sites in the UK have to pass a slew of stringent tests before they are given a licence, and one of these tests is the fairness of their software. Powering every casino online site in the UK is a piece of software known as a random number generator. As its name suggests, this software generates a series of random numbers; numbers which are then turned into results on the screen such as a blackjack hand or roulette spin. That means that every roll of the dice, slot machine spin, and shuffle of card deck at a casino online mathematically mirrors what could happen at a land based casino.

Before an online casino is certified, it must allow a third-party organisation, such as ecogra, to test the software. Only after thousands of outcomes have been carried out and assessed will the operator be given a seal of approval.

Once the casino has had its random number generator certified as fair, they can then apply for a UK igaming licence. However, this isn't the end of the story. To ensure that an online casino doesn't let its standards slip, regulatory bodies such as the UK gambling commission (UKGC) will continually monitor operator's random number generators. Sites often display their certificates and audit reports on their sites.

How to spot a rigged casino

Rigged online casinos are far less common than you might expect. If you manage to find an unlicensed casino or a gambling site that had its credentials revoked, you run the risk of playing rigged games. Generally, if you stick to recommended sites, you won't have to deal with unfair games or other troubling issues. The easiest way to spot a dishonest gambling site is to rely on blacklists, detailing exactly which sites to avoid and why.

It's worth noting that unfair games aren't the only thing to watch out for when gambling on the internet. Unscrupulous sites are more likely to make you jump through endless hoops to claim your winnings or fail to honour their bonuses. We're mentioning these points not because we want to scare you, but so you are cautious about where you play. Fortunately, there are dozens of terrific sites that offer fair games and keep their part of the bargain.

Do something about it

Every online casino we recommend will have a valid gaming licence, which means the random number generators are all certified as fair. Of course, if you're still not happy with the service you've received and feel as though a site is rigged, you can take your grievances to the UKGC.

As the industry's governing body, the UKGC is responsible for investigating any complaints made against an online casino in the UK. If you do suspect that a casino online is rigged, then you can simply contact the UKGC by phone, email, or post and outline the nature of your complaint.

Tell them the site you've played on, the series of events you find suspicious, and any other background information you feel is relevant. After noting your complaint, the UKGC will look into the issue and inform you if it finds any instances of cheating or rigged software.

Fair play is in your hands

While the potential for rigged games certainly exists, it's far less common than you might suspect. Most of the evidence disgruntled players provide doesn't withstand minor scrutiny. Nonetheless, there's nothing wrong with a little vigilance.

Always stick to licenced online casinos. If something goes awry, don't be afraid to speak up. Finally, if you aren't satisfied with the gameplay at an online casino, it's not hard to find another place to play. All it takes is a quick swipe or click to uncover endless new options.

Are online casinos rigged?

One of the most critical questions posed by many players at some time or another relates to the fairness of online casinos. When players hit a losing streak, many tend to pose the question, “are online casinos rigged?”.

If players start assuming that all online casinos are rigged and players can’t win any money from them, casinos would have shut business by now. Of course, there are ways for casinos to guarantee that they make a profit in the long run, such as the house edge. The house edge warrants that casino makes money from players in the long run. But more of that a little later.

We want to today dispel any rumors that might arise when you are online gambling. Read on to learn more.

How do online casinos make money?

While as a player your aim is to win money, the casinos’ main goal is to make a profit from customers and staying in business. There are laws and regulations in place that make sure that casinos operate safely and securely. Gambling authorities such as the malta gaming authority and the UK gambling commission, make sure that casinos operate to a certain standard and fairly.

Every now and again when a player hits a losing streak, they start to get suspicious, assuming that either the casino games are rigged, or the casino itself is. These theories tend to come from players who have made a loss. Whether they are down on their luck or not sure how to play casino games, they always blame it on a rigged system. Why would players keep on flocking to new casinos if they were forever losing? And why would casinos offer free bonus money such as £10 free no deposit bonus to players to give them a chance at winning?

The one biggest complaint that we hear from players time and time again is that they can’t win. Sure, there is the house edge that is in place, but it’s nigh impossible to make the assumption that players never win, purely because many do and become millionaires at the click of a button.

Casino games such as online slots use random number generators, which are part of the rules and regulations as set out by the respective gambling commissions. The random number generators are in place to make sure that every spin or wager is independent of the other. Every wager thus has the same odds. Though luck plays a huge factor in winning casino games, you also need to take into consideration any possible bad decisions, especially when you are playing at the best live casinos.

Let’s be honest, bad decisions can easily lead to losing control of your emotions and leading to even more bad decisions.

How do casinos ensure fairness?

Let’s just get one thing clear. We are not, in any way, implying that every casino out there is trustworthy and fair. If anything, before signing up to any new casino, look for signs that the casino is fair and honest, as we will explain shortly. In general, if the casino is listed on here at gamblegenie, it has been deemed safe and secure. We have done all the necessary checks to make sure that the casinos are adhering to safety procedures.

In order for a casino to operate, they first need to get a gambling license. This license ensures that the casino is regularly being monitored as well as audited to ensure that players are treated in a fair manner.

Since casinos will be constantly in touch with gambling authorities as well as the government in the respected jurisdictions, there are a number of regulations that casinos have to adhere to at any costs or risk going out of business,.

How to spot a trustworthy casino?

First off, never sign up to any casino with a superb-looking casino bonus. There are many things to keep in mind, especially when you are looking for a casino bonus. Remember, that the bigger the bonus, the higher the wagering requirements, and not being able to meet playthroughs, means that you will never be able to withdraw any winnings.

Furthermore, if you are going to be sharing your personal as well as your financial information with any casino, you should make sure it’s one that keeps your information under wraps. After all, you wouldn’t share your credit card details with random strangers, and the same applies to casinos.

You should always look for signs of a gambling license on the casino you are looking to sign up to. In general, casinos publish this information at the bottom of the website. Leading gambling jurisdictions including the malta gaming authority, gibraltar as well as the united kingdom. These institutions will push gaming requirements onto casinos, to make sure that each and every player has a fair and equal chance.

One such requirement is employing the services of a random number generator as part of their safety features. The RNG is in place before the casino adds its first slot game to the website. Additionally, before signing up, always read casino reviews to learn more about the experiences of other players. You can read our casino reviews here, and understand what players are saying about the casinos towards the bottom of the review.

If you don’t research any casino properly, you are risking having your personal and financial information compromised, so it is always recommended that you research well the casino to see what other players have said about it.

Even if they have ticked all the above boxes, and are ready to make your first deposit to claim the welcome casino offer, read the terms and conditions to a) see what the number of wagering requirements are and b) to see if there are any caps on winnings. It would be pointless to deposit money and not being able to cash out any winnings. What would be the point of online gambling in that case?

Once you are happy with the casino you are signing up to, you have to play the right casino games to achieve wins. Read our guide on volatility here and how to pick the right games with the best RTP here.

Knowing how to pick the right games to lower the house edge, is only one step of many to safeguard you have the best possible gambling experience.

Online casino scam: FAQ

Players question if online casinos are scamming for a number of different reasons.
Some of these are indeed things to be wary of, whilst others are little more than rumours. The following five areas of concern, however, are arguably the most common.

Are bonuses and promotions fair and above board?

Are online casinos fair or are they rigged, why are online casinos rigged.
Almost all online casinos run some form of bonuses or promotions to try and attract customers.

The nature of and the conditions attached to these bonuses are often things which lead punters to believe that online casinos operate unfairly. The main reason for this is because of the wagering requirements which such offers routinely implement.

Wagering requirements are stipulations which state that customers must bet a certain amount of money through a casino in order to actually gain a monetary benefit from the promotion in question. They are, therefore, crucial conditions of any offer and do make bonuses more complicated and potentially less generous than they might first appear.

All online casino promotions which have wagering requirements, however, will include and explain these in the offer’s terms and conditions. It is a potential punter’s responsibility, therefore, to read those T & cs and they will then not to be caught unawares by such requirements.

If you want to find the most favourable casino bonuses then check out the linked article.

Are online casinos ‘rigged’ against players?

Another common question players have is… are casino sites rigged against them?

Casinos have a house edge built into all their games but that’s widely understood and accepted. It’s certainly shouldn’t be viewed as a scam.

Online casinos, after all, are not altruistic organisations and exist to make a profit. As such, casino games do feature a ‘house edge’ which means that in the long run it is only the casino itself that is guaranteed to make money.

In each session of playing any given game, however, players do have a real and a fair chance of winning.

That is the case, at least, when it comes to properly licensed and regulated online casinos. Those casinos are required by law to operate fairly and have their sites, their games and the random number generators which run them routinely checked by both licensing authorities and independent organisations.

Why do online casinos need to check my ID?

Are online casinos fair or are they rigged, why are online casinos rigged.
This is perhaps one of the stranger concerns held by existing and potential online casino customers. That’s because whilst some people do fear that casinos asking for ID checks is in some way dodgy, it is actually the exact opposite. It is, in fact, an example of an online casino operating wholly lawfully and properly according to its licence.

Online casinos are required by both the terms of their licences and other official legislation to verify the identities of customers in order to prevent any criminal activity taking place through their sites. As such, law abiding and trustworthy casinos may occasionally ask customers for copies of official ID documentation in order to fulfil that requirement.

Do scam casinos exist?

Are online casinos fair or are they rigged, why are online casinos rigged.
Unfortunately, the answer to this particular question is yes, but the answer would be the same when talking about any industry and not just online gambling. There are, after all, unscrupulous operators in all fields who try to take advantage of people and make themselves a quick buck.

Thanks to the well-established and stringent regulation of online gambling, however, it is easy to identify untrustworthy or scam sites before committing to use them.

Such sites, after all, will not be licensed by a recognised authority and will not be able to demonstrate the same security measures as genuine online casinos. What’s more, there are plenty of sites and forums out there which identify rogue operators and advise punters to avoid them.

Check out our casino reviews for a list of safe, non scam sites, you can use.

Do online casinos confiscate winnings?

This is another area where there are a number of potentially worrying stories shared between punters. It is true, after all, that on some occasions online casinos have been known to withhold or to remove winnings from customers’ accounts.

What should be noted, however, is that there are generally only two main circumstances under which this does occur.

1) you’ve simply joined A scammy online casino

The first is when the online casino in question falls under the category of the ‘scam sites’ we discussed above. In that case, therefore, simply avoiding those sites entirely is an easy way to circumvent the danger of not receiving the payouts you should.

2) you’ve breached their T&C’s

The other major occasion on which winnings may be withheld or confiscated is if a player has genuinely flouted the terms and conditions of an online casino.

In that circumstance, the casino is well within its rights to remove or fail to pay winnings and a player does not really have a leg to stand on (an example might be opening two accounts from the same address).

3) you can’t meet KYC requirements

All UK licensed online casinos are required to ‘know your customer’ and have their customers prove who they are before they pay out. To avoid money laundering.

If you can’t prove you are who you say you are, until you can, it’s like you’ll have winnings held. More details on this here: why do casino’s need to see my ID

Why online casinos are definitely not rigged

Are online casinos fair or are they rigged, why are online casinos rigged.

You’ll probably have heard it before, with people constantly saying that online casinos are a scam, and that they are completely rigged. Back when online casinos were first released, cheating could have been possible, however nowadays online casinos would find it virtually impossible to rig their games, even if they wanted to. So, if you need some ammunition for the next time someone accuses a casino of being rigged, you should find the guide below to be extremely helpful.

  • Look at what random number generators are

  • See why online casinos simply can’t cheat

  • Understand the penalties a casino would face for cheating

Why do people think online casinos cheat?

There’s one main reason for people deciding that a casino cheats: bad luck. What most players don’t realise is that the law of averages doesn’t guarantee that a win follows a loss, or that they recoup the exact RTP advertised on a slot machine. Instead, players might lose multiple times in a row, or even win multiple times in a row. When these losing streaks occur though, it’s easy to simply blame the casino for them, instead of simply putting it down to bad luck – which is exactly what it is.

So-called “bad beats” also play a role in people thinking that casinos are rigged. For example, another player hitting their card on the river during a game of poker would be called a bad beat. These losses stick in the mind longer than any wins though, which is why people are usually so keen to bring them up. Winning and losing go hand in hand at online casinos, and players need to accept that both will happen to them at some point.

Back when online casinos were first released, cheating could have been possible, however nowadays online casinos would find it virtually impossible to rig their games.

Why casinos can’t cheat

The first reason why casinos don’t cheat is a simple one: they don’t need to. Casinos are profitable businesses, and they make more than enough money without having to resort to underhand tactics. In fact, cheating could be potentially disastrous for them, as if found out they’d lose huge amounts of money, and could even go out of business. Cheating simply isn’t worth the risk for them.

All UK players are also protected by a regulatory body when playing at an online casino, which comes in the form of the UK gambling commission. This is a government run organisation, tasked with overseeing the ways in which each and every casino operates, with a particular remit to look at how fairly they treat their players. It is mandatory for any casino accepting online players from the UK to be regulated by the gambling commission, so if you find a casino that isn’t, you should avoid it extremely quickly.

Review sites, such as this one, are also extremely important when it comes to regulating casinos. We would expose a casino in an instant if we believed it to be cheating, and let our huge number of readers know all about them. Nothing will escape the eyes of at least one reviewer around the world, so any scam would be uncovered almost instantly.

What are random number generators?

Are online casinos fair or are they rigged, why are online casinos rigged.

A random number generator is a computer programme designed to ensure that all outcomes produced at a casino game are, as the name suggests, random. This is done by an algorithm built into the RNG, which is so complex that it’s virtually impossible to hack. The best online casinos use rngs that are independently tested, monitored and verified by external companies, so you can be sure that they are 100% fair. The details surrounding a random number generator can usually be found at the footer of a casino’s page, along with the ways in which it is tested.

If you want to find out more about random number generators, we have a page dedicated to them here on this site.

What would happen if a casino was caught cheating?

The penalties that would be handed down to a casino caught cheating would be severe, to say the very least. The UK gambling commission would almost certainly order the site to stop accepting UK players and, if the company was based in the UK, could even shut the site down entirely. What’s more, prosecutions would almost certainly follow, with both the casino and individual staff members taken to court.

Cheating casinos might also face court proceedings from a huge number of players, all of whom lost out due to the casino’s underhand practices. This, when combined with the threat of closure, is enough to persuade casinos that cheating their players quite simply isn’t worth it.

The odds of losing 10 bets on black in a row, which includes both spins that are 'red' as well as spinning the green zero, can all calculated as follows:. The probability of fair two spins in a row can be calculated by taking the odds of losing one spin and multiplying it against itself:. Editor’s inbox: is it possible for online casinos to be rigged?

UK-licensed online casinos use random number generators to ensure game outcomes are 100% random and fair. We talk to alvin rizaldi at itech labs to learn more about how they work and how the prevent online casinos from being rigged

Are online casinos fair or are they rigged, why are online casinos rigged.

One of the most common email subject headings we see land in the find my UK casino inbox each week is “are online casinos rigged?”.

Despite the many steps operators must take to ensure game outcomes are random and fair in order to obtain a licence from the UK gambling commission (UKGC), trust among players remains low.

In fact, in its latest participation report, the UKGC found that only 30% of respondents thought that gambling was fair and could be trusted.

This is a little surprising when you consider that UK-licensed online casinos use random number generators (rngs) to decide the outcome of games – at random, as the name suggests.

Not only that, but rngs have to be tested by independent third parties to ensure they are actually random and that they are working as they should be.

In addition to this, each game has a return to player (RTP) – the amount the game pays back to players – which must also be tested and verified.

Most players are unaware of random number generators, how they work and why they mean that online casinos can’t be rigged. The same can be said for rtps.

To help explain rngs and rtps, and how they are tested and verified, we spoke to alvin rizaldi, chief commercial officer at independent testing house, itech labs.

Are online casinos fair or are they rigged, why are online casinos rigged.

Alvin rizaldi, CCO at independent testing house, itech labs

FIRST UP, WHAT IS A RANDOM NUMBER GENERATOR AND HOW DOES IT WORK:

“an RNG is a hardware device (HRNG) or a software programme (pseudo RNG or PRNG) that generates a sequence of numbers that cannot be predicted. To do this, online casinos use tested and certified hardware rngs or software algorithms to generate the random numbers,” alvin says.

“they are used in slots games to determine the symbols that land with each spin, for shuffling the decks in card games and for drawing balls in games like bingo and lottery. They also work across both desktop and mobile.”

Still a bit confused? Let’s take a slot game such as big time gaming’s bonanza, which can be played at UK-licensed online casino sites such as foxy casino and unibet, as an example.

The RNG fires into action as soon as you hit “spin” and uses its algorithm to generate a number that determines which symbols land on the reels and thus determines the outcome of the game.

Random numbers translate into a specific set of numbers that match the symbols on the reels. The player can then see whether they have won or lost.

If this is still a little technical, think of a random number generator as a string of lights but where only one bulb can be lit at any given time.

When you hit “spin” the electrical current runs up and down the wire, passing through the bulbs, before selecting one at random to illuminate.

The light represents the winning number selected by the RNG (and thus the corresponding symbols).

SECONDLY, WHAT IS THE RETURN TO PLAYER?

“the return to player is the ratio of money won to bets placed,” says alvin. “so if money won is £90 and bets placed is £100, the RTP of that game is 90%.”

Most slot games have an RTP of around 96.5% which means that for every £100 wagered on that game, £96 is payed back to players.

That said, this is just an average and does not mean that for every £100 you wager you will get £96 back. One player may win £500 while another may loose £1,000.

TESTING RNGS AND RTPS MEANS UK-LICENSED ONLINE CASINOS CANNOT BE RIGGED:

Of course, rngs and rtps alone don’t stop online casinos from being “rigged” and that is where independent testing houses such as itech labs come in.

They spend two to three weeks testing all aspects of random number generators, and additional time testing the return to player for each game, to ensure they are indeed random and that everything is working as it should be.

All UK-licensed online casinos and game developers are required to undergo independent third-party testing by the gambling commission.

“to prevent rigging, random number generators and games must be independently certified and all critical code for rngs, pay tables and game logic must be baselined and monitored,” says alvin.

“our test methodology includes examination of source code, compiling the code and generating numbers, conducting die-hard tests on the numbers generated by the algorithm and conducting chi-square tests on the much smaller scaled numbers used by the games.”

JARGON BUSTING:

A die-hard test is… a battery of statistical tests for measuring the quality of a random number generator. These tests are done at the bits level (1’s and O’s) using 80 million bits generated by the RNG for each test (in computers at the hardware level, each number exist in binary form using the digits 1’s and 0’s only).

A chi-square test is… conducted on the actual numbers used by the games to make sure all possible numbers have equal probability of occurring. For example, in a 90-ball bingo game, these tests ensure that each of the 90 numbers have equal probability of occurring.

THESE ARE THE STEPS ITECH LABS TAKES WHEN TESTING RNGS:

Alvin says that testing is done in three stages and includes the following:

1. Examination of source code and compilation:

  • Identification of RNG algorithm and researching known weaknesses

  • Verifying internal state of RNG

  • Verifying that the RNG implementation caters for unpredictability and non-repeatability requirements

  • Verifying seeding, background cycling and minimal re-seeding

  • Verifying the use of the random numbers, including scaling and shuffling

  • Compiling the RNG code (after all code issues are resolved)

2. Raw numbers generated by the RNG algorithm are subjected to “diehard” tests

3. Generating sample scaled output and applying “chi-square” tests.

If the RNG passes all of the above it is certified and this certification is valid for as long as the source code remains the same. If the source code is changed, the RNG must be re-tested.

But do any rngs fail these tests? And what happens if they do? Alvin explains:

“we usually find many issues during the code review process and these are reported back to the customer. The customer can then fix these issues and send an updated code for review. This continues until all code issues are fixed.

“once this has been done, we then conduct the various tests outlined above. During testing we may still find issues which again are reported to the customer for fixing.

“any serious issues such as a bad algorithm are identified at the code review stage and the customer is asked to re-submit the code using one of the well-known public domain algorithms.”

These are the well-known public domain algorithms:

  1. Mersenne twister (MT)

  2. ISAAC 64

  3. Fortuna

  4. SHA1, MT+SHA1

  5. WELL1024A, WELL512A

  6. MD5 hash

AND THIS IS HOW RTPS ARE TESTED:

The return to player is a little easier to test for simpler games as they are tested using mathematical equations on a spreadsheet.

That said, more complex games are subject to a complex simulation process where all rules, game logic and pay tables are implemented independently of the game in a separate programme.

This programme is run automatically millions of times over and then the total wins to bets ratio is calculated and compared with the number provided by the game developer.

If it is a match, the RTP is approved and certified. If it is not a match, investigations are conducted to identify the reason for the mismatch.

Game certification also includes additional testing to ensure game rules and artwork match game functionality, and to verify pay-outs and examine source code for the critical part of the game logic.

HOW TO CHECK THAT RNGS AND RTPS HAVE BEEN TESTED:

Most UK-licensed online casino operators are proud of their RNG certificates and display a link to the independent testing house on the footer of their website.

In addition to itech labs, other reputable testing labs include gaming laboratories international and ecogra.

For operators that have been tested by itech labs, if you click on the logo at the footer on the homepage it will take you to the itech labs website and the operator’s original certificate.

If an operator has been tested by itech labs it will display its logo at the bottom of its homepage

Click the logo to see the operator’s itech labs certificate

Alternatively, you can contact customer support and ask one of the agents to provide you with a copy of its most recent RNG certificate.

In terms of RTP, you can usually find this by clicking the information tab in the game window. If you’d like to see the RTP certificate just ask customer support and they will be able to provide it.

These are three find my UK casino recommended sites that have had their rngs tested by itech labs and which share a link to their certificate on their homepage:

FINALLY, THE INDEPENDENT TESTERS ARE INDEPENDENTLY TESTED:

As a final safeguard, independent testing houses such as itech labs are subject to independent audits themselves to ensure their processes and procedures are above board.

Every two years it is subject to a thorough audit by the international organisation for standardisation and holds ISO/IEC 17025 and ISO/IEC 17020 accreditation.

All of this means that UK-licensed online casinos are reputable and fair, and that game outcomes simply can’t be rigged.

Alvin says: “you can be sure that online casino software running under a UK license is independently tested and regularly audited.

“if you are still uncertain, look out for online casinos that have been tested by itech labs to be totally sure their rngs and rtps are working as they should be!”

If you have any more questions about online casino fairness, rngs or rtps you can contact the find my UK casino team here.

Are online slots A scam & rigged?

Are online casinos fair or are they rigged, why are online casinos rigged.

Are online slots are a scam? Are they rigged by the casinos to prevent real players from winning?

These are important and common questions and we’re hear the lay them to bed once and for all. Let’s kick things off by talking about if online casinos actually have the power to rig slot machines.

Can slot machines be rigged?

The best way to answer this question is to look at exactly how slot machines work. There are two crucial mechanics you need to be aware of: the random number generator (RNG) and the return to player percentage (RTP).

Random number generators

Are online casinos fair or are they rigged, why are online casinos rigged.
An RNG is a complex piece of software especially designed and created to produce strings of entirely random numbers and these numbers then dictate what symbols are displayed on the slot machine.

What is important to recognise here is that the software ensures that all combinations displayed to players are random. That therefore means that there is no scope for a casino to control the result of a player’s specific spin.

Are they truly random?

When players learn of rngs and hear that legitimate machines are indeed all entirely random, many players are more than a little sceptical as they are sure that casinos must do something to guarantee that they profit from slots.

The fact is, that the casinos certainly do have those kinds of guarantees but that it has nothing to do with ‘rigging’ the machine or cheating players.

RTP percentages: the casinos edge

Are online casinos fair or are they rigged, why are online casinos rigged.
Over the long term – and when we say long term we mean a life span of a machine which can encompass millions of spins – a casino or games provider can be certain that they will profit from the machine due to the ‘house edge’.

That ‘house edge’ is built into every slot by way of the payout or return to player (RTP) percentage of the machine.

That RTP percentage is programmed into each slots game by the software companies who make them and represents the amount paid out to players as compared with the total amount wagered on the game over an extended period of time.

How do RTP percentages work?

If an RTP percentage is 95% for example, then a machine will on average pay out 95% of what it takes in over its life time and the ‘house edge’ will be 5% – as that is what the casino or provider will take for themselves.

That combination of RNG and payout percentage therefore, is what ensures that casinos make a long term profit from slots games without the need to ‘rig’ the machines or to attempt to scam players.

The machines can – and do – payout to different players at different times after all, whilst still maintaining the overall ‘house edge’ over an extended period of time.

How to recognise safe casino sites

All of the above should help to ease players’ minds when it comes to the general fairness of slot games, but that does of course depend upon the casino or site in question operating in an above board and legitimate fashion.

That makes it crucial then, for players to be able to spot when a site is legitimate and is therefore one that they can trust. Fortunately, there are a number of things to immediately look out for which should make this process nice and simple.

  • Any legitimate site will be fully licensed by the relevant regulator for their country and will display their license number or the logo somewhere on site.

  • Legitimate casino sites will frequently have their games audited and test by external bodies. Look out for the ecogra logo (mostly UK), the technical systems testing logo and the gaming laboratories international logo (mostly US) to ensure this is happening.

  • Another good indicator of a trustworthy site is one which takes responsible gambling seriously. Look out for logos and information relating to this on site to verify legitimacy (responsible gambling trust, gamcare, gambleaware.Co.Uk and gamblers anonymous international service).

Are casinos honest with slot machines or do they cheat?

Now that we know RNG’s control each spin or a slot and how much control casinos have over the payout percentages of their slot machines and games, all that is left is to discuss is whether they are honest in their use of that control.

Fortunately, when it comes to the kind of legitimate sites that we have described how to identify above, the answer is a resounding yes.

As we have discussed after all, the sites do not have the ability to change the payout percentages of their games and they are rigorously tested to ensure that the percentages are indeed what they claim them to be. What’s more, some sites openly publish those percentages for players to see and most others will provide them if a player directly asks for them.

There are bad eggs out there though… so if you’re worried about playing at a fair and regulated online casino then simply select one from our list and you can rest your mind at ease.
