“our databases lacked details about the attributes of individual games and machines,” explains daradich, adding, “now that we’ve seen what can be learned from this kind of information, we plan to redevelop and augment our data capture with an eye toward future analysis capabilities.”
Leveraging categorization and each game vendor’s market research, it became possible to isolate a surrogate to help it analyze options for new game purchases. Moving forward, the technology will allow saskgaming to predict the potential impact of changes on slot performance based ‘what if ’ scenarios. This provides much greater forecasting power than the traditional approach to decision making, which was limited to reports based on one variable, looking exclusively at historical data.
Finally, advanced optimization was utilized to determine the best approach to future business, considering factors such as physical space and budget. This information will help saskgaming optimize its slot purchase options, including the analysis of which machines to replace and when to replace them, while also ensuring player experience is not hampered through down-time.

Power BI, R and marketing campaign analysis
For the second post in a row, I’m going to talk about casino performance analysis so I’m feeling a little like marty mcfly from back to the future. One of the biggest struggles we had was with our direct mail offers to our players’ club members. A proper direct mail offer campaign would be setup with a control group so we could perform analysis against the control group, but try to tell that to the A tier player that didn’t get an offer or a different amount then the other A tier players.
Without the control group, we would calculate the difference between the average coin in before and after the direct mail offer was received to judge our incremental revenue and evaluate whether the campaign was successful. This method was very simplistic because it assumed all differences between performance before and after the interaction are due strictly to that direct mail offer. Google set out to help digital marketers with this problem of no control group in 2014 and we can use their causal impact R package to analyze our casino’s direct mail offers as well.
Using the same daily coin in (gross sales) data from the last blog on “use power BI and R to quickly identify business insights”, we need to complete the following steps:
- Install the following R packages
- Install.Packages(“devtools”)
- Install.Packages(“boomspikeslab”)
- Install.Packages(“dtw”)
- Install.Packages(“chron”)
- Devtools::install_github(“google/causalimpact”)
- In power BI desktop, select the “R” in the visualizations section and then drag the denomination, date and revenue fields from the coin in tables into the values section to build our dataset for are R code.

The casual impact R package reduces the below three graphs
Original: solid, black line is observed data before the intervention and dotted, blue line is the predicted coin in values for what would have occurred without the intervention
Pointwise: the net difference between the observed and predicted response on the original scale, or the difference between the solid, black line and the dotted, blue line on the original graph.
Cumulative: dotted, blue line is the individual causal effects added up in time, day after day.
For all three graphs, the light blue shaded area represents the results in a 95% confidence level. The farther that the graph extends past the beginning of the intervention, the less certain of the causal effect; hence, the larger the shaded area.

Use power BI and R to quickly identify business insights
In statistics, the correlation coefficient or pearson’s correlation is a measure the strength and direction of association that exists between two continuous variables. The value of correlation, r, is always between +1 and –1. To interpret its value, see which of the following values your correlation r is closest to:
- Exactly –1. A perfect downhill (negative) linear relationship
- –0.70. A strong downhill (negative) linear relationship
- –0.50. A moderate downhill (negative) relationship
- –0.30. A weak downhill (negative) linear relationship
- 0. No linear relationship
- +0.30. A weak uphill (positive) linear relationship
- +0.50. A moderate uphill (positive) relationship
- +0.70. A strong uphill (positive) linear relationship
- Exactly +1. A perfect uphill (positive) linear relationship
Don’t make the mistake of thinking that a correlation of –1 is a bad thing, indicating no relationship. Just the opposite is true! A correlation of –1 means the data are lined up in a perfect straight line, the strongest negative linear relationship you can get. The “–” (minus) sign just happens to indicate a negative relationship, a downhill line. Most statisticians like to see correlations beyond at least +0.5 or –0.5 before drawing any conclusions. This is all great knowledge, but how can we apply this in a business environment. When I worked for a casino, we kept a daily record of coin in (gross sales), high temp, low temp and fuel price in an excel spreadsheet and tried to find a correlation between these data points. Try find the correlation with this data.
With power BI and R, we can make this association all that much faster and with slicer for interactivity to drill into the data points. I first downloaded the R correlation plot custom visual located here and then excel spreadsheet from above imported into power BI. I was then able easily identify the correlations in a matter of minutes.
Positive correlations are identified with increasingly dark blue circles, negative correlation is red. The greater the bigger and darker the circle. Selecting “nov” from the calendar slicer, you will notice that the intersection between “low temp” has a positive correlation (blue circle), so the lower the temperature the less you will realize in coin in for the that month.
Selecting the “jul” from the calendar slicer, and notice that the correlation is different.
In this case, the correlation is zero between temperature and coin in.

Illinois casino gaming revenue analysis
Being the fifth most populous american state and being ranked twelfth in terms of population density in 2014, illinois is a key transportation hub with a diversified economic base.
As far as casino gaming industry is concerned, with the passage of the riverboat gambling act in early 1990s the sector was rejuvenated after decades of sluggish performance. Ten licenses were authorized across the state and in september 1991 alton saw the opening of the first modern illinois riverboat. Later a few more such establishments opened doors to customers – one in east st. Louis, one in aurora, two in joliet, one in metropolis, one in east peoria, one in east dubuque and one in rock island. Riverboats have generated almost USD 11 billion in tax revenue to the state since 1991.
In 2009 casino gaming in the state experienced another expansion wave after the video gaming act was approved. However, mass approval of business entities’ requests for video gaming licenses has not been initiated by the illinois gaming board until 2012. The industry was projected to generate about USD 300 million in tax revenue on annual basis.

Total casino gaming revenue in the state of illinois shrank 5.67% in 2014, marking a second straight year of decline and also the most significant one since 2009, when total gaming revenue contracted at an annual rate of 8.91%. Total casino gaming revenue in illinois shrank in five out of the past seven years, while the largest annual slump (20.91%) was recorded in 2008.
The number of table games at illinois casinos has been in an uptrend since 2007, with the peak being reached in 2012 at 287. At the same time, the number of slot machines has shown a similar tendency, while its peak was reached in 2013 at 11 275.

In the past three years rivers casino has had the largest number of table games in the state, preceeded by grand victoria casino in the period 2009-2011. Casino queen has had the most table games in 2007 and 2008, but their number has diminished ever since. The same establishment, on the other hand, has been a leader in terms of slot machine capacity in 2013 and 2014.
In 2007 and 2008 the largest number of slots has been offered by hollywood casino joliet.

During the past two years total casino gaming revenue has slumped in all establishments in illinois with the exception of rivers casino. The latter has reported annual growth of its gross gaming revenue since 2012.
Four casinos registered seven consecutive years of declines in their gross gaming revenue. These were argosy casino alton, harrah’s joliet casino & hotel, hollywood casino aurora and grand victoria casino.
Five casinos posted three successive periods of total gaming revenue decrease between 2012 and 2014, while six out of ten establishments had four consecutive periods of decline in total revenue from casino gaming operations between 2008 and 2011.
In 2014 argosy casino alton posted the most significant annual decrease of its gross casino gaming revenue since 2008 (12.01%), while par-A-dice casino reported not only the largest drop in total gaming revenue among all casinos in the state last year, but also its biggest revenue slump during the period 2007-2014.

In 2010 both slot and table game revenues rose at the fastest annual rates at hollywood casino joliet (15.52% and 55.54%, respectively).
In 2012 both slot and table game revenues grew at the most remarkable annual rates at rivers casino (130.89% and 149.67%, respectively).
In 2009 both slot and table game revenues fell the most at hollywood casino joliet (34.16% and 39.80%, respectively).
In 2011 both slot and table game revenues dropped at the fastest pace at harrah’s metropolis casino & hotel (13.95% and 20.88%, respectively).
In 2012 both slot and table game revenues decreased the most at grand victoria casino (17.05% and 19.10%, respectively).

Revenue share of table games expanded for a third consecutive year in 2014 at rivers casino, at harrah’s metropolis casino & hotel and at par-A-dice casino, while seven out of 10 establishments had their table revenue share increased for a second consecutive year in 2014. In addition, par-A-dice has been the only casino to have its table revenue share expanded for a fifth straight year in 2014.
Five casinos expanded their revenue share of table games in four out of the past seven years. These were jumer’s casino & hotel, hollywood casino joliet, harrah’s metropolis casino & hotel, harrah’s joliet casino & hotel and casino queen.
Three casinos (hollywood casino aurora, grand victoria casino and argosy casino alton) expanded their revenue share of table games in three out of the past seven years, while par-A-dice has been the only establishment to have its table revenue share boosted in six out of the past seven years.
2008, 2013 and 2014 have been the years, when table games predominantly increased their revenue share at casinos across illinois. 2009 and 2011 have been the years, when table games predominantly had a lesser contribution to total casino gaming revenue statewide.

If the mafia didn't exist, it would be necessary to invent it.
The same is true of las vegas. There is a universal need to believe in an outfit that exists outside the rules and can get things done.
There's a related need for a place where the rules are suspended, where there's no day or night, where everything has a price, where if you're lucky, you go home a millionaire. Of course, people who go to vegas lose money, and people who deal with the mob, regret it. But hope is what we're talking about. Neither the mob nor vegas could exist if most people weren't optimists.
Martin scorsese's fascinating new film "casino" knows a lot about the mafia's relationship with las vegas. It's based on a book by nicholas pileggi, who had full access to a man who once ran four casinos for the mob, and whose true story inspires the movie's plot.
Like "the godfather," it makes us feel like eavesdroppers in a secret place.
The movie opens with a car bombing, and the figure of sam "ace" rothstein floating through the air. The movie explains how such a thing came to happen to him. The first hour plays like a documentary; there's a narration, by rothstein (robert de niro) and others, explaining how the mob skimmed millions out of the casinos.
It's an interesting process. Assuming you could steal 25 percent of the slot-machine take - what would you do with tons of coins? How would you convert them into bills that could be stuffed into the weekly suitcase for delivery to the mob in kansas city? "casino" knows. It also knows how to skim from the other games, and from food service and the gift shops. And it knows about how casinos don't like to be stolen from.
There's an incident where a man is cheating at blackjack, and a couple of security guys sidle up to him and jab him with a stun gun.
He collapses, the security guys call for medical attention, and hurry him away to a little room where they pound on his fingers with a mallet and he agrees that he made a very bad mistake.
Rothstein, based on the real-life figure of frank (lefty) rosenthal, starts life as a sports oddsmaker in chicago, attracts the attention of the mob because of his genius with numbers and is assigned to run casinos because he looks like an efficient businessman who will encourage the vegas goose to continue laying its golden eggs. He is a man who detests unnecessary trouble. One day, however, trouble finds him, in the person of ginger mckenna (sharon stone), a high-priced call girl.
Scorsese shows him seeing ginger on a TV security monitor and falling so instantly in love that the image becomes a freeze-frame.
Ace showers her with gifts, which she is happy to have, but when he wants to marry her, she objects; she's been with a pimp named lester diamond (james woods) since she was a kid, and she doesn't want to give up her profession. Rothstein will make her an offer she can't refuse: cars, diamonds, furs, a home with a pool and the key to his safety-deposit box. She marries him. It is ace's first mistake.
Another mistake was to meet nicky santoro (joe pesci) when they were both kids in chicago. Nicky is a thief and a killer, who comes to vegas, forms a crew and throws his weight around. After he squeezes one guy's head in a vise, the word goes out that he's the mob's enforcer. Not true, but people believe it, and soon nicky's name is being linked with his old pal ace in all the newspapers.
Scorsese tells his story with the energy and pacing he's famous for, and with a wealth of little details that feel just right. Not only the details of tacky 1970s period decor, but little moments such as when ace orders the casino cooks to put "exactly the same amount of blueberries in every muffin." or when airborne feds are circling a golf course while spying on the hoods, and their plane runs out of gas and they have to make an emergency landing right on the green.
And when crucial evidence is obtained because a low-level hood kept a record of his expenses. And when ace hosts a weekly show on local TV - and reveals a talent for juggling.
Meanwhile, ginger starts drinking, and ace is worried about their kid, and they start having public fights, and she turns to nicky for advice that soon becomes consolation, and when ace finds out she may be fooling around, he utters a line that, in its way, is perfect: "I just hope it's not somebody who I think it might be." "it was," a narrator tells us, "the last time street guys would ever be given such an opportunity." all the mob had to do was take care of business. But when ace met ginger and when nicky came to town, the pieces were in place for the mob to become the biggest loser in vegas history. "we screwed up good," nicky says, not using exactly those words. Scorsese gets the feel, the mood, almost the smell of the city just right; de niro and pesci inhabit their roles with unconscious assurance, stone's call girl is her best performance, and the supporting cast includes such people as don rickles, whose very presence evokes an era (his job is to stand impassively beside the boss and look very sad about what might happen to whoever the boss is talking to).
Unlike his other mafia movies ("mean streets" and "goodfellas"), scorsese's "casino" is as concerned with history as with plot and character. The city of las vegas is his subject, and he shows how it permitted people like ace, ginger and nicky to flourish, and then spit them out, because the vegas machine is too profitable and powerful to allow anyone to slow its operation. When the mafia, using funds from the teamsters union, was ejected in the late 1970s, the 1980s ushered in a new source of financing: junk bonds. The guys who floated those might be the inspiration for "casino II." "the big corporations took over," the narrator observes, almost sadly. "today, it works like disneyland." which brings us back to our opening insight. In a sense, people need to believe a town like vegas is run by guys like ace and nicky.
In a place that breaks the rules, maybe you can break some, too. For those with the gambler mentality, it's actually less reassuring to know that giant corporations, financed by bonds and run by accountants, operate the vegas machine. They know all the odds, and the house always wins. With ace in charge, who knows what might happen?
